When I am learning new words and reviewing old ones memrise is only allowing me to select multiple choice answers when I have requested typing only. This has only become a problem within the last few minutes as on previous occasions I have had to answer multiple choice questions and typing questions.
@o8vij I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM
May not even be a bug. Could be something they flipped themselves. This only happens when there is more than 3 words. So single to two words are not effected, but anything more than 3 it goes to audio only or multi choice only. To be honest with you, I donāt mindā¦ it is super frustrating to get an wrong because you had an honest typo and you just typed a pretty long sentence out.
Iām also having the same problem. All longer phrases are being offered only as multiple choice, and I am not learning them properly. I hope this gets fixed quickly!!
If this is a deliberate change, it sucks and I want the old way back. Multiple choice is simply not demanding enough. Itās a lousy, lazy and ineffective way to learn to produce language.
I hate this change. I can pass any multiple choice test memrise throws at me, but I donāt learn how to formulate it in my on head from memory. Is that not the point of this website?!
There must be an option implemented to turn off multiple choice for people like me who see typing answers as integral to the memrise service. I owe typing my answer to be key to my rapid improvement in Russian for example, I had to spell out words and recall them perfectly, which is key in Russian.
I am so disappointed about this change, it really is a dealbreaker for me - I hope the Memrise Team can respond to this concern and address it in a timely fashion.
I have the same issue.
Makes no sense. I have the option selected because I want to type and now I only get multi-choice.
That is not even learning. I just look at the answers and select the correct without thinking to much.
I donāt understand why they mess everything over and overā¦ it seems they donāt care anymore about the users.
Same problem here since yesterday. Too many multiple-choice or audio for single words and ONLY multiple-choice for phrases. This just does not work for me.
@Memrise: Please revert to the old behavior or (ideally) let users opt to either type or do multiple-choice! Thank you.
Probably it will again take several weeks for them to even notice that this change was totally bad for their customers and users and then they will say that this way THEIR OWN courses work better like they imagined them and they again shit on the user-created courses and this ābugā will stay.
Yes, this started happening to me today, I hope itās a bug and not deliberate, typing is the best way for me to see if I really know how to produce a sentence, I donāt really feel like Iām learning with multiple choice or audio questions.
For me this is just as bad as when the Memrise website was down. Iām not able to have any confidence in my learning or ability to recall language with multiple choice only (or even with tapping tests!).
Typing tests are integral to Memrise for me. By all means Memrise Team, the default setting can be as multiple choice and tapping tests. But please allow the option to have typing tests for all phrases both long and short.
@Lien can you assure us you will have a response for us soon? I donāt expect you to have the answer right not, but at least reassure us this is being looked at.
Yep just echoing all of the above comments. Way too easy choosing multiple choice and not actually typing the whole sentence!
at the very least, I would like an option for this. But I do feel the multi choice is too aggressive. It makes me type out for example, āāsich ausgeben alsāā but not āāsich anlachenāā. The moment it hits three words pretty much, it spazzes on you and makes you choose it from a list.
having put a lot of time into building courses and grooming them for over two years now or so - this is a bit alarming. Is this a glitch in the system or on purpose ?
I can see the reasoning behind such a decision but really this should be optional so you can choose whether or not you want this limitation.
Personal if this is left this way I will have spent many many hours in vain. I was actually considering becoming a paid member and wouldnāt mind if the option for typing full sentences is only offered to paying members. But I donāt think I will become a paying member if this situation is not rectified - I can memorize single words on my own and or on other free platforms.
There are many good reasons why being able to type a whole sentence is beneficial - it confronts you with grammar rather than just the matter of memorization.
Thanks for an otherwise truly great website !
I have just activated my account just to say that I do have the same issue and I find it very frustrating now to learn. Itās not demanding enough for me and I feel like I just need to find the first word and the rest will fit. I donāt even bother to read the whole sentence, just select the one that starts with the initial word I suspect it would. Please change it to the way it was before. Do it fast because I want to LEARN and NOT SELECT stupid multiple choice test. LAWL
to be honest, I was also annoyed by some courses where you had to write whole sentences and the course creator didnāt spend much time with alternatives, which is needed for these sentences. These were the only sentences where i was using my phone and the app version (which is horrible when it comes to learning results, because there is simply no effort) to make these sentences by tapping/sorting tests, because i was annoyed of typing those long sentences and having to write them many times again because i had made a typo somewhere or was missing a single word. Yes this was annoying.
But 99,9% of those words that are now affected here in a very bad way are verbs in which more forms and/or prepositions are also given. like āto go went goneā where there is a structure behind it. or āto beat someone upā, yes they are also more than 3 words each but these are the words that want to be learned. language learning isnāt just about learning 1 to 1 expressions like āhouse - Hausā.
I spent hundreds of hours creating my courses with around 10000 words and now it isnāt useful at all anymore. It took memrise several months to āfixā the parenthesis/brackets bug and the comma bug and they in the end simply said everything is fine and will be like this from now on, because the creators of the official memrise courses were too lazy to simply add their vocabulary to the system in the way it would have worked but rather adjust the whole system to their vocabulary list.
And now only 2 month later there will be another huge disaster where i am sure Memrise gives a shit about it, because their beginner courses work fine and their users simply have to adjust to it. The users, who were also doing their huge part in making memrise popular by creating own courses.
The current state of Memrise is even worse than what you describe.
The comma & parenthesis bugs still havenāt been completely fixed all these months later. There are still problems that make some strict typing courses totally unusable, because the items contain either answers or alternates with commas or parenthesis, and correct answers are incorrectly marked wrong. Here is just one very recent example of that problem:
And Memrise just ignores the numerous problem reports as they keep on piling up, and compounding the usersā frustration.
It could still be a bug to be honest. The check box to have typing test is still there in the options. It is just not working.
The checkbox is actually about tapping tests, not typing. There are sadly no typing related options available.
