Memrise website and apps are down [ Edit: Fixed! ] (and Closed )

Review still not normal for me. I am not especially concerned about learning streaks (I cannot always work on Memrise every day though I try) which is just as well if the system has these glitches. I was wondering a little if I was becoming addicted to Memrise but it looks like the system has an inbuilt cure.:grinning:

What is problematic for me is that my review counts keep going up and up. Unless I want a big speed bump in my review load, I will have to work these review counts back down over several days. Not only do I lose the ability to add words for several days because the site is broke, I will will lose several more days as I work the backlog down.

Guys, stop acting like it’s the end of the world. Yes, I’d like it to be fixed already, everyone would, but coming here 5 times over to say “it’s still not working!!” won’t make them fix it any faster. Use another site or some offline resource (textbooks still exist, you know ;-)) for a few days until they get stuff back to normal.

And do read what people have said before posting the same thing again - I mean, they already said they’d fix the streaks, so stop asking whether they’ll do it.

As for the big review backlogs, Speed Review is your friend. The website, not the app version. (The app version is slower.)

No it’s not understandable at all unless they are developing this site with the most primitive set of tools imaginable. Every proper web dev stack has the ability to roll back seriously broken deployments (and with the right proceses in place seriously broken live deployments should virtually never happen, whereas they have been a regular ‘feature’ of Memrise in the last few months).

speed review doesn’t work either… lol . 3455 items for review for the basic courses I’m doing (most of them created myself - hm) above 9200 in all

yes, Memrise really starts to annoy more than it is fun. I was a premium member since i found it, but since a few month ago, since they removed the old course forums and deleted so much information with it that course creators made in discussions, every few days there is another problem, and now since already 2 month they aren’t able to fix the hyphen troubles, and since almost a month there is also the parenthesis problem. and now not even the review does work for already 2 days.

@Hydroptere: Hey, I said it would help, not that it would suddenly solve everything. Along the lines “in case you forgot about it, Speed Review would, well, speed things up.”

@Zyme: I wouldn’t know about these, I guess I was lucky not to encounter them. I agree, I wouldn’t have removed the course forums as such either, but let’s be honest, they were vastly out of date and unpractical from a purely technical point of view. (No search etc.) So maybe this will be better in the long run, we’ll see.

A quick update from today:

  • We have rolled out a fix that should make learning sessions on web work. You should get new words in sessions and not the same repeating ones.
  • The learning progress is being saved.
  • The review counter is not working yet and reviewing sessions are stuck in a loop, but this is currently being worked on
  • Streaks should update since yesterday, but if it broke for Sunday and yesterday, then this is pending a separate fix and/or our team going through the individual cases. We will get on to that as soon as the progress for reviewing is working.
  • Mobile apps, independent of the website, should be working fine regarding progress. There can be issues with the streak, but again, we will look into this as the next thing.

Thank you all for the feedback! The work continues…

Yes, I went to Speed Review and it does not deplete the outstanding Review either, although I do amass points. A couple of days ago the system was not working at all but I have a lot of completed courses and Review takes up much of my Memrise time. So a non-functioning Review is a problem for me.

well… it definitely does not help… yet

(did anybody asked for a solution that “suddenly solves everything”?)

I’m not sure what you mean when you say we will get new words in sessions if sessions are stuck in a loop. I haven’t seen any progress - I complete a session, the number of items isn’t updated and if I go into that course again, I get the same words.

Yes it works for me.
But there are still some issues here. First, the number of learned words is not correlated between the web and the app. I learned on both, so now I have different word score on the web site and on the android phone. Hope you will be able to fix it. The general point score seems to update normally on both versions.
Second, when I try to start learning by pushing the green “learn” button on my home page, the learning session does not start. Instead I get to the page of the level I have already finished. I can load a learning session only if I start it from a particular level page. Not sure if it is a serious bug but still.

Thanks a lot for your efforts, hope the team will be able to sort it all out sooner or later.

Reviewing sessions at least now allow you to continue your streak on the web app, but achieve little else as obviously it’s not remembering which words you’ve reviewed.
I really am flummoxed as to how something could get so badly broken with a single update and why it wasn’t rolled back the moment it was obviously not working. In fact the whole system needs to be rolled back to at least a month ago before all the bugs with commas and hyphens and what not were introduced. I’m happy to volunteer as a guinea pig to test out your beta/preview site for future changes like this, I’m sure others here would be too if it will prevent future fiascos of this scale. In the meantime it looks like you need to replace your QA team or whoever determined that the previous updates passed all functional testing.

There’s staging.memrise.com for stuff they’re still testing; looks like something went wrong at a lower level since that’s in the same state as the main site at the moment.

Didn’t know about that one - does it point to the same “live” database (I should hope not - but it seems to have all my latest data, including streaks I just lengthened 10 minutes ago)? Free for anyone to use?
I did already suspect it was a back-end issue, sounds suspiciously like a breaking schema change (which I admit are always challenging, so you only ever do them if they’re absolutely essential)

review words completely whack. Still makes the web version practically unusable.

This is not a “little” bug.

Since the update, the courses with a big number of words and/or many options for voicing records became a slack. They don’t react quick enough, seem to be an entire slowdown.

Can the problem be related to memory/information volume?

I’ve done 7 times of the 4th course…then realized that may be a problem with the system…:disappointed_relieved:

This is becoming a joke, especially for those of us who pay for the service.
