[Course Forum] HSK Level 6 by DrewSSP

I think the definition makes sense , in either way. I’ve heard it used like “intel” in English when discussing something like a police department receiving new information. But I just meant in the naive sense, i see “intelligence” and I gravitate towards thinking of smart people, not military intelligence.

I think that’s a fair point. Do you think changing it to “(military) intelligence” would be better, then? Seems like a good change to me.

Sounds good to me!

Cool. I’ve changed the primary definition to “(military) intelligence” and added a couple of alternatives.

@Hydroptere, “information” should now be accepted as an answer for 情报。Do you have a source for “information gathering” being a good translation for 情报,though?

guten very Morgen

hi

for 动手, could you please introduce the alternatives to start working, start work, get going, get rolling

many thanks
http://dict.youdao.com/search?le=eng&q=动手&tab=&keyfrom=dict2.top
http://dict.cn/动手

慈善 - of course you can call it “philantropic” as main definition, however, archchinese, xiaoma, dict.cn, youdao say “benevolent, charitable” and don’t even mention philantropic

also for 艰难, the 4 dictionaries cited above: difficult, hard, challenging (arduous not mentioned, although is just a synonym, I know)

many thanks

Thanks, as usual, @Hydroptere. All of your proposed changes were made to the database.

On 慈善 for example you can see here that it used in for example 慈善事业、慈善义、慈善基金、慈善工作、慈善捐款

http://corpus.leeds.ac.uk/cgi-bin/cqp.pl?searchstring=慈善&corpuslist=INTERNET-ZH&searchtype=conc&contextsize=100c&sort1=word&sort2=right&terminate=100&llstat=on&cleft=0&cright=1&cfilter=

This is a more limited source: https://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=c%3A*慈善*

My above link from corpus.leeds works for that. I’d run any proposed changes through that and see if actual usage is the same as what the dictionaries say.

muchas gracias! (you had birthday?)

and btw, @DrewSSP, for 确信: the only dictionary saying “confident” for this is dict.cn; the rest (xiaome, yabla, youdao, arhchinese etc say something along the lines of: to be convinced, to be sure, to firmly believe, to be positive that, definite news

  • 审判: also “to judge”? (youdao) (xiaoma is a great tool, but has its “limitations” - dict.cn goes … almost to far and gives a long list: put (someone) to trial; trial;judgement; to judge justice adjudgement juicio oyertry to tryput on trial, the trial)

  • 即将: be about to; be on the point of; soon; in no time; on the eve of; about to; about to do; be ready to (dictcn, xiaoma, youdao, mgdb)

I am not sure that the audio for 愈 is the right one… it seems “a something” in third tone, but not yu4

also, would you please introduce the alternative “to distinguish” for 区分?
also, would be possible to have the alternative “capacity” for 能量 (see http://dict.youdao.com/search?le=eng&q=能量&tab=&keyfrom=dict2.top)
also: 开除: to expel; discharge; dismiss; send down; fire; disciplinary dismissal; sack

many, many thanks

@DrewSSP, @neoncube, and who else might take care of the course (it seems that lately the course is orphaned …)

would you please have the kindness to add “to distinguish, distinguish” as alternatives to 区分? also "to deal, deal " to 协议? also confidentiality, secrecy to保密? also “really not” to 并非 ? also “preferably, had rather” to 宁愿?

many thanks

@Hydroptere, I’ve added “to distinguish” and “distinguish” to 区分。

I’ve also added “deal” as an alternative to 协议,but I’m not sure that “to deal” is a correct synonym. Do you have an example of it being used like that?

Wiktionary shows 保密 as only being a verb, so I’m hesitant to add “confidentiality” and “secrecy” as alternatives to 保密。

Too tired to think about the other two at the moment.

I haven’t been doing the course lately, so I haven’t really been making improvements to it. DrewSSP does seem to have been absent for awhile. Hopefully he’s just busy

Hey guys, I HAVE been busy lately but mostly with… dare I say it… Anki. I found myself getting frustrated with how Memrise has not been focussing on issues that I believe to be the most pressing and made the jump to a different service. I do believe in Memrise and I know it’s a very powerful tool but for now it doesn’t fit my needs.

I will still be checking in here and there but my presence on Memrise is going to be a lot less than it used to be. If my presence is too infrequent to help you maintain this course then I am willing to add contributors.

On a side note, the present contrubtors are:

The current definition for 神奇 is “miraculous, mystical, magical”. I think I’ve been told that the word for “miraculous” is a different word (maybe 奇妙) and that it’s better to use 神奇 when you’re talking about things that are magical/mysterious but aren’t good.

The wiktionary entry for 神奇 only lists “magical” and “mysterious” as definitions.

Can anyone confirm my thoughts or shed some light on this?

can we have the variant “to abandon” for 抛弃 (now only “abandon” is available")

on a side note (@DrewSSP or @neoncube ) , none of the above mentioned contributors seems still active on memrise, i can take this course as contributor only until i finish it and only for such small like adding "to"s

thanks

@Hydroptere you’re now a contributor. Thanks for taking over!

many thanks. I am trying to learn as fast as I can, who knows if memrise will be usable 6 months from now. You’re on Anki, isnt so?

Thanks for offering to help out
