[Course Forum] 5000 Important words in Greek

Awesome, thanks Neal!

One more: δώρο, Level 84, can you please add an unarticled version as an Alt? Thank you!
δώρο, Level 84
- Fixed
extremely similar
- διαλέγω = pick, επιλέγω = choose
μπερδεμένος & συγκεχυμένος
- μπερδεμένος is already confused and συγκεχυμένος is unclear - so what’s the problem here?
υπόκλιση
- made the primary bow/curtsey (reported earlier), and τόξο is ‘bow’ like an arc or a curve.
εκκλησία & καθολικό
now καθολικό is “church (chapel)”
εταφέρω & κουβαλάω
- κουβαλάω is now to transfer, to move, to carry
αγγίζω & ακουμπάω
- αγγίζω is touch, ακουμπάω is brush against (touch)

Many thanks for all those Neal. And thanks for the updated sheet.

μπερδεμένος is still listed as ‘unclear’ in the spreadsheet, but I can see that it’s ‘confused’ on the actual course.

So, no need to change anything!

Good morning Neal! Here’s another list of duplicated English primaries (almost all originally pulled from Orphans).

If you’re able to Cross-Alt and/or tweak the English definitions when you get a mo (no rush), that’d be awesome.

  • Level 22 and Level 84: στέγη & σκεπή, roof
  • Level 29 and Level 84: κατάστημα & μαγαζί, shop
  • Level 16 and Level 86: πανωφόρι & μπουφάν, jacket
  • Level 42 and Level 87: δείχνω & σημαίνω, show
  • Level 56 and Level 87: μένω & μείνω, to stay
  • Level 71 and Level 87: δουλεύω & λειτουργώ, to work
  • Level 52 and Level 87: τροχός & ρόδα, wheel
  • Level 61 and Level 88: τελικά & επιτέλους, finally
  • Level 36 and Level 88: νέος & καινούργιος, new
  • Level 28 and Level 88: έντομο & ζουζούνι, insect
  • Level 33 and Level 90: παινεύω & υμνώ, to praise
  • Level 36 and Level 91: ολόκληρος & όλος, whole
  • Level 25 and Level 91, λέξη & λόγος, word
  • Level 91: έτος & χρονιά, year
  • Level 25 and Level 92, ηλικία & ηλίκια, age (is the latter possibly incorrect?)

Finally, these words will be marked as incorrect unless an article is used. Can you please add unarticled versions as an Alt?

  • Level 86: Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής
  • Level 87: δάδα
  • Level 92: ανάστημα
Thanks and have a good weekend!
μπερδεμένος
- fixed in spreadsheet so next time I post one you’ll get the fix.
Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής
- makes no sense, the first Alt is already “_Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής” so, I’ve deleted and re-added. Try it again.
δάδα & ανάστημα
- both fixed.

  • I have fixed χρονιά & έτος by cross-referencing them, they really are the same thing AFAIK.
  • And ηλίκα was a mistake and has been removed, replaced by adjective άτυπος/άτυπη (informal).
  • Primary definition of λόγος is reason, speech, etc. it actually has quite a few meanings.
  • ολόκληρος & όλος cross-Alt’d as they really are the same thing.
  • έντομο is now insect, ζουζούνι is bug.
  • νέος is now young;new and καινούργιος is new.
  • στέγη & σκεπή are cross-Alt’d
  • κατάστημα & μαγαζί are cross-Alt’d
  • παινεύω is now compliment;adulate;praise & υμνώ is praise;laud (as in singing, church, etc.)
  • μείνω now stay; μένω now reside
  • λειτουργώ is now to function, operate, work, and δουλεύω is work
  • δείχνω is show σημαίνω is to signify (and many other meanings)
  • τροχός & ρόδα, wheel - both are now cross-Alt’d
  • πανωφόρι = coat, overcoat (and more) & μπουφάν = jacket, bodice, coat
  • τελικά = ultimately, finally, eventually & επιτέλους = finally, at last

Thanks Neal, much appreciated as always!

After finishing all of the above fixes I’ve discovered a few more dupes (and even a triplicate!) I’ll fix later on and post a new spreadsheet.

I think they’re an occupational hazard once a course gets this big!

Thanks again for all your work.

All the dupes are now removed and replaced with 8 new words. Two new Levels have been added. Word Count = 2,564!

G’day Neal! Hope you had a good weekend.

I’m tantalisingly close to finishing all the new words - only 60 or so to go. Here’s what I’ve picked up over the past few days. As always, there’s no rush, and all your work is really appreciated.

Primary English Dupes
All of these words have identical primary English definitions. Can you please tweak one of the primaries and/or cross-Alt both of them?

  • Level 5 and Level 11: γνωρίζω & ξέρω, to know
  • Level 87 and Level 90: ενοικιάζω & ενοικιάζεται, to rent
  • Level 63 and Level 94: ξεχνάω & λησμονώ, to forget
  • Level 94: ανάμνηση & μνήμη, memory
  • Level 42 and Level 96: λοξός & σχιστός, slanted
  • Level 98 and Level 101: χορδή & συγχορδία, chord

For ενοικιάζεται, perhaps something like ‘available to rent’ could work, as it’s usually what you see on signs everywhere in Greece (along with ενοικιάζονται).

I think, but might be wrong, that ανάμνηση implies more of a specific recollection, while μνήμη is a more general term.

Needs Unarticled Alt

  • Level 91: χοντρός
  • Level 92: δακτυλικό αποτύπωμα
  • Level 93: τόπος γέννησης
  • Level 94: απομνημόνευση
  • Level 96: γκριζομάλλης
  • Level 96: φράντζα
  • Level 100: γεωμετρία

Other

  • Level 96: αλαγοουρά. I might be wrong, but I believe this should be spelled αλογοουρά
  • Level 63 and Level 96: πυκνός appears twice (dense/thick)
  • Level 82 and Level 97: ενθουσιασμένος appears twice (enthusiastic/excited)
  • Level 32 and Level 96: ταραχή appears twice (riot/agitation). The Level 97 version also requires an unarticled Alt
  • Level 98: κινηματογράφος appears twice, once as an adjective and once as a noun. Should the adjectival version be κινηματικός or κινηματογραφικός instead?
  • Level 53 and Level 99: ενδιαφέρον appears twice (concern/interest)
  • Level 99: All the communist words - I believe it’s common to spell these both with one μ or two, depending on the preference of the writer (indeed, you’ve done so yourself). Would you be able to add μ and μμ versions of each as Alts?
  • Level 98 and Level 100: δημοκρατία appears twice (democracy/republic). The Level 100 version is also missing its article
  • Level 91 and Level 101: The femine version of university student appears twice, as φοιτητρία and φοιτήτρια
  • Level 100: εικονοκλάστης. This is listed as an adjective, but is it the noun? I could be wrong, but I think εικονοκλαστικός may be the adjective
  • Level 100: αγιογράφος. Might be a bit better to have the primary for this as hagiographer, with iconographer as an alt
  • Level 20 and Level 101: ‘To sing’ appears twice, as both τραγουδάω and τραγουδώ. Generally throughout the course, -άω endings have been preferenced
  • Level 101: σφραγισμένος. A query - is that definitely a legitimate way to spell it? I guess it must be, if there’s a Forvo for it, but I could only find σφραγιστός in my Oxford, which makes sense given the way that unsealed is constructed
  • Level 102: μπαλαντέρ. This is given as a neuter noun, but (very suprisingly I might add, given the -έρ ending and the fact it’s a loan word), I believe this is actually masculine

Phew! That’s it for now; hopefully should get the whole course finished in the next few days (until you add to it again).

Cheers,
Sean
Needs Unarticled Alt - χοντρός, απομνημόνευση, γκριζομάλλης, φράντζα, ταραχή, δημοκρατία
- all are fixed.
αλαγοουρά
- yes, you are correct and it is corrected.
All the communist words
- all the single μ versions are primary now, with μμ as Alts

I’ve also cross-Alt’d δημοκρατία as republic and democracy

Everything else will get done, got to go to work now!

Thanks Neal, you’re a star!

NB: I’ve just added a couple of things to the original post above.

ανάμνηση is now recollection;remembrance;memory
ενοικιάζεται
- to let (to rent out)
Needs Unarticled Alt
- all fixed

  • Level 82 and Level 97: ενθουσιασμένος: 97 removed, 82 now enthusiastic; delighted; excited

  • Level 63 and Level 96: πυκνός: 96 removed, 63 now thick; dense

  • Level 32 and Level 96: ταραχή: 32 removed - actually in 97

  • Level 91 φοιτητρία removed

  • εικονοκλάστης now a noun

  • εικονοκλαστικός is the adjective, will add in one of the spaces where words were removed!

  • Level 100: αγιογράφος - I know that would appear to make sense, but hagiographer is very uncommon in English-speaking iconography circles (at least the ones I’m familiar with). So, I’m going to leave it as is.

  • Level 20 and Level 101: τραγουδάω (Alt: τραγουδώ) kept in 20, removed 101.

  • Level 102: μπαλαντέρ - yes, it is masculine, online dictionary described it as n., but my Φυτράκη says m.! This may all be because το τζόκερ is n.

  • Level 101: σφραγισμένος - not entirely certain, this came up because it is the word used to describe used, sealed as in stamps/stamp collecting. So for now, I have added σφραγιστός as Alt.

  • Level 53 and Level 99: ενδιαφέρον : 53 kept, 99 removed, primary def. is interest, Alt is concern.

  • κινηματογραφικός - fixed

Please do NOT add anything else to the above post, I’m not done and it is confusing. Just start another post if needed. Will try to finish the last few things by tomorrow. This is what I have left to address:

Level 5 and Level 11: γνωρίζω & ξέρω, to know
Level 87 and Level 90: ενοικιάζω & ενοικιάζεται, to rent
Level 63 and Level 94: ξεχνάω & λησμονώ, to forget
Level 42 and Level 96: λοξός & σχιστός, slanted
Level 98 and Level 101: χορδή & συγχορδία, chord

…and I’m done, for now! All 2,560 learnt. So, until the course grows again, you shouldn’t get any more massive posts like the ones above - although I’ll probably pick up the odd thing here and there that I didn’t notice the first time round.

Sorry about that - was just trying to reduce the clutter a bit. Won’t do in future.

OK, here’s the final batch of things I picked up on:

  • Level 20 and Level 102: ‘batch’ is primary English duped, as φουρνιά and παρτίδα
  • Level 102: πιόνι για σκάκι could do with an unarticled Alt
  • Level 102: οκτάβα, the audio doesn’t seem to work

Thanks once again for all your work on this over the past few weeks, it’s massively appreciated.

FYI, I’ll be spending a fair bit of time over the next few weeks Duolingoing and adding to Orphans. If you wanted to crib, anything new that shows up in Orphans should not have already appeared in Most Important.

Hmmm… Level 67, we’ve got αποκάλυψις for apocalypse.

I was scratching my head over the weird -ις ending on this, as I think it’s the first time I’ve encountered it in a feminine noun.

So, I’ve been looking things up in my Oxford and on the internet. I could be very wrong, but I think αποκάλυψις is the Ancient Greek and that αποκάλυψη, which we’ve got in Level 51, is the Modern Greek.

I’m perfectly happy to be wrong but would appreciate it if someone was able to clarify. Cheers!

αλογοουρά, Level 96, is now spelled correctly, but if you could add an unarticled Alt, it’d be much appreciated.
αποκάλυψις
- I’ve changed it to the modern version: αποκάλυψη w/ new pronunciation.
αλογοουρά
- alas, when I fixed the spelling, I forgot to fix the Alt. Now fixed!
final batch of things
- all fixed.
λοξός & σχιστός
- cross-Alt w/ each other - they both mean slanted, but λοξός has other subtle meanings like “touched” (crazy) and “cockeyed”, whereas σχιστός might describe someone’s eyes being slanted, etc.
λησμονώ
- changed primary to “to not remember” and also cross-Alt’d with ξεχνάω. They really mean the same thing, but I think that ξεχναω is the more common.
ενοικιάζω & ενοικιάζεται
now are “to rent” and “to be rented” respectively
γνωρίζω & ξέρω
- cross Alt’d

And I think I’m now caught up on your edits/fixes. Thanks very much for contributing so much to the improvement of the course. Next I plan to add a list of 60+ basic/useful adjectives. There are still so many things not in here!

Thank you so much Neal! And you’re very, very welcome.

I can see that 16 new words crept in while I was sleeping today. Awesome stuff

OK, νιώθω μόνη, Level 97. Should νιώθω μόνος be accepted as an Alt? I would have thought that if the speaker was male, νιώθω μόνος would have been the correct formulation. Although I could of course be wrong and μόνη exists in feminine noun form?

Actually if we’re going to be consistent we should have νιώθω μόνος as primary, with νιώθω μόνη as Alt. Done!

More words will continue to creep in!
