Hello,

I’ve been using Memrise for some years now, and I noticed a few months ago that it is not possible to choose courses that are not languages on the app anymore. Is it a bug and will it stay like this? It is weird that I haven’t seen any topic about this issue.

Thanks for your help.

Hey I was about to post on this same issue myself with the android app. Like the IOS app I can now only search languages. I’m not sure if it is actually a bug or if memrise are quietly killing off the other topics and user generated courses?

Hi

You can still access courses created by fellow learners by heading over to the Courses page in the website. Once you start learning there, the course will be added to your app.

Sure. Who needs to find minority languages and courses anyway? The next step: The number of users for these courses has dropped significantly, so let’s just get rid of them altogether.

Thank you for your answer,
May I know the reason why you have removed the access on phones, and if it will ever get back?

what a shame!

And easy to fix with a global search feature in the iOS app that would take one day to implement…

I hope the user created courses will be added into the app categories again. I have no problem with the official courses being on top but I mostly use user created courses and I don’t want to have to go to a browser to find the course I want to use in the app.

After FOUR YEARS, @MemriseSupport, community courses are still not searchable on the app. Would you mind giving us a reason?

On the community zoom call today, @BenWhately gave an explanation for this.

According to him, showing user generated courses in search results in the app caused user engagement with the app to drop, and then they hid user generated courses, engagement in the app increase. I think they were mainly talking about average time spent on the app, per user - the average user spent more time in the app when user courses were not findable.

Also, Memrise equates this with effectiveness; that is, they believe that users spending more time on average per session means they are learning languages more effectively. At least that is what I understood they were saying. So, putting those two things together, they believe that hiding user-created courses in the mobile app, leads to users learning languages more effectively.

One thing they did not address on the call (and there was not enough time to ask about it) is whether they ever considered separating user-created courses from the main language categories. That is, on the “I want to learn…” screen where it lists all of the Memrise-supported languages and you click on one, they could add another option at the bottom for “community contributed courses” or something like that. People who just want to learn one of the main languages would thus never see these courses, but people who want to look for more could choose to click on that last item and search there.

That simply can’t be true. It took me 4-5 months to know about community courses at all. They were hidden behind “I want to learn more” or something button. I would have completely stopped to use Memrise if not for this treasure trove. Shortly after that they eliminated access to community courses.
