Can't download course offline

I’ve Memrise pro and regularly download courses. This week I wanted to download this course: Hindi—Typing InScript and Vocabulary

Symptoms

  • I get every time either
    • a download error “Download problem - Please check your network connection and…” (Can’t read the rest.), or
    • forever the notification “Downloading Hindi - Typing… Gathering information” (Both in the notifications.)
  • The network connection is fine - I can browse.
  • When it gives the ‘network connection’ error, it never even starts downloading. It only showed the ‘gathering information’ notification.
  • I am able to download other courses (even downloaded one today).

Solutions already tried

  • deleted the course and re-added it. That workaround worked the first time, but then by user error the network was disconnected for a second or so and reconnected again. At that point it had download about 80% or so. Then it failed.
  • deleted again the course and then re-added, did not work.
  • Checked this solution : Android Cannot Download Course Possible Solution - not applicable, as others download fine (and I have GBs of space).
  • Bug or not ? / New Android Update / No downloadable Course - Also not applicable: download feature is still there.
  • Cannot download courses - restarted the phone several times, even when the course was deleted. Did not reinstall the App - a bridge too far to me.

Any suggestions?

Do we know why it happens actually? Is it something in the course the can trigger it? Something else?
Thank you!

Basically, I had the same problem. Only I can’t download any course anymore. All suggestions applied as indicated above. Reported the bug twice two weeks ago, however, no reply nor help until now.
Thus, currently I can’t use memrise offline even if I’m pro member.

Any suggestions and solutions?

There could be several different reason for why the course is unable to download, for example some courses may download perfectly fine while others may struggle to download. It all depends on your phone and the size of the course.

One reason why the courses may fail is because the pictures and/or mems may have a large file size. Your device doesn’t have enough device memory (not file storage) to handle this so the download will fail when the limit is reached.

I would suggest logging out and in, however, this would mean you’ll have to download all the courses you’ve previously downloaded before. But this is a pain, and will not guarantee it will download. This suggestion is fine if you only have a few number of courses already downloaded, but if you have several, it may not be worth it.

My phone has 3 GB RAM and still over 1GB free on the internal SD. Should be enough I guess, but this course does have a large number of pictures (which load sometimes quite slow).

As a side note about pictures: However, they never show when studying with the App. So, why would those pictures download then? I can’t even see them when going into a level and just browsing through the list, then clicking on an entry - no pictures, never! If they are never shown, perhaps they shouldn’t be downloaded.

We changed the way we handle downloading courses, mind having a look and tell me if the course now downloads or does the issue still persists.

A fix was released relating to this issue on Wednesday, March 14th.

Hello Joshua,

I am curious:

Are you talking about the server backend code or is this (only or too) app code related?

Best regards / Viele Grüße aus Deutschland

Afaik, it’s the way the application handles downloading the course.

No changes in the backend to my knowledge.

I will try! Since it’s an update at the client side, I suppose I have to update the APP first.

Update March 31st: Well, I tried, and no luck.

  • checked play store, and it doesn’t give the option update, only open and uninstall: i.e. I had and have already the latest version
  • the latest version on Play store is from December 16th, 2017 or so.
  • tried to download that same course again - no luck: keeps staying on ‘Gathering information…’

When the fix was release, was the App also updated in the Play Store?

I am Memrise pro and since 2 updates ago all my courses have been deleted from my android mobile; since then is impossible to download courses anymore. I have tried several times to cancel and install again the application but always the same problem. I have tried also to save on the sd card or on the mobile memory but still same problem.
I have tried with new courses, different size courses but the bug is consistent with all the files.
Because I used often memrise offline when I fly, this is very annoying because I can not use it offline anymore.
I have reported the bug but had no reply so far. If there is no fix soon I will have to cancel my pro registration.

That is must very annoying indeed!
You said “since 2 updates ago” -> I suppose, two updates of the (Android) App. Would it be possible to install the previous version of the App?

@BeaTrisy: can we do anything about this problem? Thanks.

@BeaTrisy 2: I heard there is an update of the Memrise app (Wed. March 14th or so); I wonder how to get that. On Play Store it is still the Dec. 6th version. Can we side-load it from the Memrise website? Thanks.

If this announced version does not work for you for the offline download, you could e.g rollback to 2-3 Android app versions before (or older) by download the .APK file from an reliable archive site and re-installing the app .APK file locally.

Update:
Unfortuantely, uptodown.com dates back to 2.94_4349 on 01/03/2018, so no updates from March.
There are other APK archive sites (which I do not know well) that seem to already offer V2.94_4793 from 03/28/2018.
Probably it would be better to get updated / testing Android app versions from the Memrise team directly, instead of having to rely on external archive sites.

I would expect that when it worked for you before, then those courses should still work with the “last good (for you)” Android app version?

You could first try both (newer version) and older Android .APK version on an Android emulator on your computer (acts like a sandbox and you do have nothing to change on your phone), if you want.

However, with the above announcement Joshua would probably be thankful if you could give him a hint what (bigger?) courses do not work - just paste the links - and what Android app version you are using.

The version on Play Store is from December 6th. How is it possible then that there are versions 3rd of January and 28th of March?

Update: Uhhh, just checked, now there is an April 3rd version. Probably check it out…

Update: I just checked again on my phone: Surprise: the version is 2.94_3308_memrise updated on Dec 6, 2017. See screenshot.
The catch is probably that the website says:

Updated

April 3, 2018

Size

Varies with device

Current Version

Varies with device

Requires Android

Varies with device

We no longer support devices under Lollipop (Android 5.0). Probably the device you are using is Android JellyBean which was no longer supported from December 2017.

This would explain why you’re no longer receiving updates on your device.

Do you receive an error message?

Interesting notice! Good to have you here!

Q: Has this information been published on your Memrise blog site? I believe I never read anything about this anywhere (and I should know as an IT guy, shouldn’t I)?

Did you know that some (stable) Android emulators (e.g KOPlayer) still use Android V4.4…however, I could be wrong with that information  Will have to check again this weekend.

But on my really really slow 32-bit system I could not get any 64-bit Android emulator running (freezing, crashing, incompatible OpenGL with my old GPU), nor with more resource hungry Android 6.0/7.0 OS images…

I knew It for Android v4.4 because I had done tests with “Oracle VirtualBox” which I could not get newer Android images running smoothly.

It says, not literally because the message is in italian:
“download problem, check your internet connection and try again”

It is not even starting the download but stop after some check.

I managed to fix this issue on my Huawei Mediapad T3 tablet. Apparently Memrise will only save courses to your Internal memory. Go to Settings, Storage and change default Storage from SD to Internal.

I have finally been able to install a new version of Memrise. The download problem still exists and is the same as before.
Here are the screenshot of the new version.
Old: 2.94_4256
New: 2.94_4349 running now

@Joshua: could you confirm the latest version number of Memrise? If I need to run a newer one, I will try to update again, because it doesn’t help you fixing bugs, if users don’t install those fixes. Thank you!

That would not be the solution for me, because some courses I can download and some not.
