Beta - don’t get rid of typing tests

I enjoyed the course, thank you.

Can you do the learning process by typing, in this course?

I see, i only get multiple choice when learning, with the old interface i would get a mix.

Thank you for your patience and the time you have given me, I think I have to learn in the old way without using memrise, Because it no longer has the former function for me.
Yours sincerely

You are right, for some reason typing tests are not working on that particular course. i will raise that with our developers.
The course also seems quite low quality with a confusing answer set and some wrong translations, perhaps you could try another course for now?

Thank you for your follow up
I need to learn the vocabulary of this course to prepare for the TOEFL test, and given the amount of time I have devoted to learning this course, it is not possible for me to change the course.

Hi Sorrna, I’ve looked at the course and the reason you are not seeing typing tests is that the course creator has disabled them.
This overrules what is in your settings because we have to assume the creator had a reason to disable them. So you are not seeing typing tests in this course
The course creator msroudsari does not appear to be on the forum so I can’t tag him to ask him to change it
You could create a new post on the forum asking to become a contributor to the course and our support team can look into that for you, if the course creator is inactive you will be granted contributor status.
To enable typing tests you have to go to edit a level, then edit a column and click on the ‘Testing’ tab and enable typing tests.

Interesting. So why did he get typing tests with the old interface?

  • Either he is lying and never did.

  • Or “This overrules what is in your settings because we have to assume the creator had a reason to disable them.” is possibly a false statement. Because typing tests Did show up and the creator was simply not aware of this toggle.

Perhaps they was using a user script which forced typing always and which won’t work in the rebuild, or it was a different course, or it was a different level as that setting is at an individual level.

Are you sure that contributors have the rights to be able to do that? Because none of the other options on the testing tab can be changed by contributors.

Dear James
Thanks for the details you mentioned.

Oh, thank you for the clarification. The course editor really is an enigma wrapped in a whole load of mysteries.

It’s not always clear for contributors either. As a contributor I can select some choices on the testing tab but I can’t save them. You can read some more about limited permissions for contributors in this thread from 2019

Hey @James_g_memrise, another two months have passed now and the non-persistent keyboard issue still exists …

This is a damn lie @James_g_memrise. Features, e.g., mems and difficult words, have been removed or fundamentally altered. You folks keep trying to fix things that are not broken.

Actually, I totally do NOT want to review something I’ve known and been using for years or even decades. Not because it’s harder, but because it’s more work for no gain. I could, of course, go through the courses I do and check the word lists, and avoid all courses that contain “unneeded work”, but that’s just a PITA.

Please, please, do NOT make assumptions and speak for the entire user base if something is YOUR opinion.

Well, in short: there is more to this option than to just use it as a on/off setting. Which is why I’d have loved to have seen it be implemented differently. It’s actually quite easy:

  • Some words are already known, so you don’t want to (have to) “learn” them, i. e. you don’t want to go through 6 cycles to “fully plant” them; yet you still want to review them. In other words: you know them, but you don’t want to ignore them.
  • Some words are known and you don’t want to or don’t have to review them. In other words: you know them and you don’t want to see/review them ever again. That’s when you want to ignore them.
  • Some words are unknown but you don’t want to learn them, in other words you want to ignore them as well (erroneous entries, stuff that doesn’t matter to you, etc.). You want to ignore these as well.
  • Some/most word are neither known nor to be ignored. This is probably the most common type. You want to learn and review those.

And as to whatever statements I make: I’m not speaking for anyone but myself. Why would you assume I’d be speaking for you or even the “entire user base”?

I like your analysis of why you ignore words, Olaf.

Another reason I ignore a word or phrase is, I already know an alternative word or way of saying the same idea, having learned Italian as a young child growing up in Italy.

And I learned a lot of French from a young age too.
