[App Feedback] My thoughts on the New App Layout

Why can’t you?

The latest version is a classic case of over tinkering.

It happens quite often in programming.

Just when they get it right, someone has a new, great idea and then they overdo it and botch it.

Clearly, Memrise programmers never have to use their final product in a learning situation.

Disappointing.

I was a beta tester for the Memrise iOS apps, too, but work has kept me quite busy recently. And for a while I missed updates… Then I saw the new icon in my iPad. No idea how long the new format was tested, but it is definitely different than any version I saw!

Even while I was beta-testing the iOS app, I much preffered to use the website for courses such as Urdu or Arabic, and at least on my iPad that’s still possible. Now I’ll be using Safari for my French courses, too. C’est la vie. No offline access, but wifi’s more common than rockets.

@tariqnisarahmed ~ did offline access disappear with the recent iOS update ? It is still available on v 2.1.16 (2411). Wifi may be common in most parts of the world, but not all. Offline access is important.

It’s just awful.

I’m looking into LingQ at the moment.

I may have to change over to them.

I wonder if they have the same problem as we do - the programmers not listening to what the users want!

Thanks for the great new courses, though (especially Russian)!

@Lien - I hope all is well with you. Thank you for the response. This is certainly good news, at least for us “old timers”. It does beg the obvious question though. How will Memrise determine who is a “long-term loyal Memriser” and who is not when it comes to future updates ?

For instance, there is an update out now, but I haven’t installed it yet (mainly because of the uncertainty of this particular functionality). Because of where I live, I depend on offline access a lot. I can’t lose this, even if it means never updating again.

So if I install future updates (which I had faithfully always done in the past) how will Memrise know to keep offline access for my instance, but not include it for others utilizing the same update version ? Do you somehow verify against the original activity date, or something like that ?

P.S. I like your forum title “chief cheerleader”. For a long time people used to jokingly call me that too because I would always recommend Memrise to them. It makes me smile every time I see it now next to your name. :grinning:

Is it determined by the account age (e.g. 3 months old) or by the sign up date (e.g. < februrary 2016)
Basically, can new users eventually become old users?

@Lien - May be Memrise will also consider giving Pro to those who is active in the forums and/or reports bugs?

May be :dromedary_camel:

Two items - 1) Why isn’t my picture that appears on all courses i am active in, showing up on this new forum? 2) Is there any way now to comment or mention errors on a specific course without broadcasting your comments to everybody? This new format appears very NON-user friendly and I at least will not be using to very often. gustav46

Hi @Lien, so it has been 6 weeks or so since the big change and I guess Memrise has decided to stick with the new interface with only a few improvements (fixing many of the scrolling issues) and without implementing greater customisation. It’s a shame as far as I’m concerned because I was learning many courses, a little everyday, which is now more hassle than it’s worth. Nonetheless, I have learnt to live with (by ignoring) the planet screen and I will admit I really like the immersion videos derived from the membus; that was a great idea. I was just wondering if, at this stage, Memrise wanted to officially respond to the various comments and users who here, and elsewhere on the forum, have raised concerns and made practical suggestions for changes? Does the company have any particular plans to provide greater customisation to appeal to some of their heavy users? Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you and or your colleagues.

I feel that the new app layout is really bad and a lot harder to use than the previous one I hope they improve it soon as it would dramatically help my experience using the apps interface

Don’t bet on any changes.

It’s like talking to a brick wall.

Very disappointing.

I won’t be reviewing my Pro subscription unless they do something about their woeful app.

Perhaps when people stop subscribing to Pro will Memrise actually listen to their users.

I can’t speak for others but I feel we are just being ignored.

I think they listen to us, but it doesn’t mean they will do as we (some subgroup of users) wish. Current version is better compared to that one when new design was released, now I am at least able to use it.

Well, it takes some extra clicks here and there and there’s still lots of absolutely useless graphics (and I would still like to know who could appreciate it, probably preteen kids?), but it isn’t such blocker as it was.

So, two months ago we had app with reasonable design, then came version which was totally unusable for heavy learners… And now it is something like “ok, I hate how it looks, but I can cope with it.”
