Hi @Lien, so it has been 6 weeks or so since the big change and I guess Memrise has decided to stick with the new interface with only a few improvements (fixing many of the scrolling issues) and without implementing greater customisation. It’s a shame as far as I’m concerned because I was learning many courses, a little everyday, which is now more hassle than it’s worth. Nonetheless, I have learnt to live with (by ignoring) the planet screen and I will admit I really like the immersion videos derived from the membus; that was a great idea. I was just wondering if, at this stage, Memrise wanted to officially respond to the various comments and users who here, and elsewhere on the forum, have raised concerns and made practical suggestions for changes? Does the company have any particular plans to provide greater customisation to appeal to some of their heavy users? Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you and or your colleagues.
I feel that the new app layout is really bad and a lot harder to use than the previous one I hope they improve it soon as it would dramatically help my experience using the apps interface
Don’t bet on any changes.
It’s like talking to a brick wall.
Very disappointing.
I won’t be reviewing my Pro subscription unless they do something about their woeful app.
Perhaps when people stop subscribing to Pro will Memrise actually listen to their users.
I can’t speak for others but I feel we are just being ignored.
I think they listen to us, but it doesn’t mean they will do as we (some subgroup of users) wish. Current version is better compared to that one when new design was released, now I am at least able to use it.
Well, it takes some extra clicks here and there and there’s still lots of absolutely useless graphics (and I would still like to know who could appreciate it, probably preteen kids?), but it isn’t such blocker as it was.
So, two months ago we had app with reasonable design, then came version which was totally unusable for heavy learners… And now it is something like “ok, I hate how it looks, but I can cope with it.”
I have to disagree.
This new version is woeful.
On one screen, you used to be able to see how many words you needed to tend, the status of your Streak for the course and how many difficult words you needed to brush up on.
Now you need to click on each course, then go to that dreadful rocket screen, click again to get the same information.
Whoever designed this new version, didn’t do so with we users in mind!
Well, in my current build of application (for Android) I can see number of words to review and streak status (for incompleted courses only) for every course in that left slide menu (well, number of difficult words is still missing, but I don’t care about it). And it is something that wasn’t there when new design was introduced.
For me, this change is difference between initial totally unusable application and current state I described (still hate it, but can use it). I agree that compared to old design the new one is really big UX fail, but really can’t agree with statement, that Memrise did nothing for heavy learners, they did, just less than wanted.
Things may have improved for Android users … but not for ios users.
I’m using the beta test version and there’s been no change!
Oh, now I understand your frustration.
If you click on the top bar of the “rocket screen” where it has the course name it will show the old interface for that screen (at least on Android). I wasn’t sure how many people knew about that “feature” so I just wanted to mention it. Unfortunately, for those of you that want to only use the old interface, I do not see an option for that. You will need to go from the rocket screen to the old interface each time.
Personally, I don’t mind the new interface and actually prefer the tab menu, but that’s just me. The planets could be scaled down a bit as it takes a long time to scroll through big courses.
I know this is old but…I have the app on my iphone but I it’s not the original version before they installed the obnoxious layout with the space/flower theme.
What are your thoughts about Grobble instead of Difficult Words?
What is Grobble?
Damn, I’ve just updated having not used it for a few days hoping that they might have implemented some positive changes only to find the most obvious update is the ‘Grobble words’. Really memrise? Those university students practicing their medical anatomy want to practice grobble words?
It has been over two weeks since I asked @Lien or her colleagues to respond to critiques presented in this thread and so far nothing. I wasn’t sure we would get a response but I had hoped I would be wrong. I guess @Jamus was right. Instead of responding, let alone implementing improvements, memrise continues to make the app more and more childish. I’m sure some kids would like it but not everyone who wants to learn is a child. To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement.
It is a new “thing” of the difficult word process. Before a word or sentence gets into the difficult word section it becomes a grobble, you have a chance to bring it back if you get it right in an other attempt.
Now you have the words you know well, a flower on a purple background, the one where you had problems, there is green “gunge” on the purple background, and the grobble comes next if you have another fail. I guess it becomes a difficult word if you fail on the grobble.
EDIT : it seems that the Grobble is in fact now replacing the difficulty word.
I much preferred the old interface, too. I loved the idea about how my memory is a garden and I have to water the flowers/review to keep up. The new design looks kind of clumsy to me in contrast to the clear, straightforward and most of all functional design of the old app. Those were the main things why I’ve been using Memrise instead of Anki or whatever.
I mean, maybe we should trust the people working at Memrise, they probably know what they’re doing - It’s their job after all, but at the moment it feels like a huge step backwards…
And one question @Lien : What is the sign-up date before which users are considered ‘longterm loyal users’ granting them the offline access for free?
It should be April 1st, says Lien here:
http://community.memrise.com/t/app-feedback-it-is-not-possible-to-download-the-courses-in-free-version/1626/20?u=widle&source_topic_id=530Okay, thanks! For some reason I had assumed they would also take that feature away from people that once were able to use it.
Luckily my assumption was wrong! ^^ “Longterm loyal Memriser” just sounds so intimidating, as if you had to be on Memrise for like 5 years or something…^^
Is Grobble really replacing difficult words?
I’ve noticed the green “gunge” for some time now, but I just assumed that my app was a little glitchy. Hahah.
On my app and on desktop, it still says “My Difficult Words” for me. I also can’t find any reference for “Grobble” anywhere except this forum.
Does anyone know if Memrise released an official changelog so we’re able to keep track of all new site and mobile updates?
I am Beta user so I might be a tad ahead. But I don’t know where the “standard” issue is at. As there was a question I answered it.
In the French Memrise I have now : Difficult words, when I had “pests words” (for Grobbles) before. It could have evolved…
Oh, that’s interesting.
How does one become a Beta user for Memrise? Do they send out special invites?
