I don’t like the new app design at all. It’s a bunch of extra fancy stuff that’s unnecessary. Change is good when it’s useful but this new design is just for looks and if looks is what was intended it could have been done with more organization. I don’t like have to scroll so much to find what I’m looking for. In every course I have to scroll about with these planets. I liked the list format better.
I agree. My biggest complaint is that we cannot see whether our goals are complete when looking at our list of courses. We have to click on each individual course to get that information.
I think it’s terrible. Mostly the quick zooming through the course, it hurts my eyes. And because we can’t see the goals anymore without going into the course, it happens everytime. It was perfectly fine before, I don’t see why they would mess with it to make it more difficult/less intuitive to use.
If we’re stuck with this, maybe they could add an option to have the courses displayed in a list format instead, for those who don’t like bouncing flashing rocket ships all over their study session.
I hate it. I don’t know why it was necessarily to change the layout. It is ruining my daily study plan, and I just got my membership… ugh.
I don’t see the point of all those planets etc. It looks very childish, I personally prefer a more professional and minimalist layout.
It looks a bit childish, but somehow I also find it to be quite cute. Well, it was mentioned on another thread that this has little to do with the “garden” and “planting/watering” idea now (or are we about to do some terraforming on alien worlds?), so the gardening icons are a bit weird when associated with these planets and spaceships.
The only problems I see are more practical:
- it’s pointlessly long to go through all the courses to check whether the daily goal is reached yet or not;
- it’s a bit longer to go from “opening the application” to “studying one specific course” if the said specific course is not the last one studied;
I don’t think I got this app update! Can any of you please post a screenshot so I can see how it is? Then I won’t download it either haha
Wow! It’s indeed waaay too different!! I think I’ll disable the automatic update just in case! Thanks!
Yeah, I really wish I hadn’t updated. If is so much harder to see which streaks you still have to maintain today. I now go to to the web site to check.
I totaly agree. The new layout is very confusing and very childisch.
It is very difficult too see all needed information.
For me the most important thing to see on a home page is the list of courses, progress for each course and the statě of daily goal.
The new layout is just terrible.
You can argue about the looks.
But in any case it degrades the usability a lot:
-
No overview
There’s no way to get an overview of my progress on individual levels.
I only see two levels at a time (of the 96 levels my course has). -
Scrolling madness
Even just opening the course make me watch that crazy automatic scrolling for four seconds.
Then I have to constantly swipe up and down in the hope that I somehow find the specific level I am searching for.
And to make matters worse each time I go into the detail view of a level and go back to the No-longer-an-Overview screen, it effing scrolls me to nirvana again.
Well, it can have been expected when they changed standard points goals with words goal in app (with the rocket icon). From my point of view, update is okay, but for scrolling. For courses with more than 15-20 lvls its reaaly inconvinient. Probably an option to choose beetwen standard and new views could do. Another (more complecated maybe, but fitting the new concept of design) way - create group of levels (solar systems) which will group e.g. 10 lvls together simplifying scrolling.
This solar system idea sounds like a pretty good one when you say it. I’m just wondering how good it would actually work (more buttons to push to get exactly at the same place, or very small super cute icons orbiting around each other?).
As for the goal, the problem is not so much that it is counted with a number of words and not a number of points, but that it’s really difficult to know how many courses with uncompleted goals are left. This creates absurd situations where, if you’re using the phone application, you might want to log into your account from your smartphone just to be able to check how many courses with unreached goals are left. This is a bit inconvenient if you’re studying in a lot of courses. I already find this inconvenient and I’m only taking a few courses that I want to study everyday…
I completely agree.
I have been beta testing for them and I said that I wasn’t taken with the new layout.
I knew it would generally not be liked.
The whole point of Memrise is to learn your chosen subject(s) not be chasing around trying to find everything.
In the drop down menu of courses, I have also recommended that the goal and number of wrong words be displayed so everything can be seen at a glance. Unfortunately, it has fallen on deaf ears.
Most times, programmers are not users so they can be out of touch with what users actually want.
This new layout is a retrograde step. It is more cumbersome to use, less informative and wastes users time.
I might have to give the app the flick and go back to the desktop version.
SCORE: Previous app 8/10. New app 5/10.
Memrise Crew - don’t forget that you have paying customers. Please start listening to them!
I have ADHD and find it extremely distracting with all the uneccesary pictures all over the place. Much preferred the old layout. I am also a paying customer. Really regretting updating now.
I see it has become a ranting subject for a lot of you. My only displeasure with the new app is that I can not see the streak objective of each course.
I agree that you can not scroll through the levels as quickly (because you can only see 2 or 3 at a time instead or 5 or 6)
But I fail to see why you need to flick/scroll through your levels :
- when you learn you go to the next level each time and you just need to know how many words are left to learn in your level (the new app does that). Do that many of you pick and choose the levels that you learn?
- when you revise, most people would bulk revise the words that are ready to revise (you get bonus for revising more words together if you get them right) and so you do not need to scroll through the levels to find where are the ready items.
So I agree that the new app is perhaps not so practical but I am not sure it is worth putting out the ones who have not tried it. Or reconsider your subscription.
It caters for most users and their general use in learning, one level after another and bulk revision.
BUT not seeing the streaks from the course’s board is a pain I give you that
Why do I need to scroll? Because I always seek for some informations.
I do Memrise and Duolingo parallel. In this specific case there is a bug. The scroll stops at the lowermost learned lesson, which is not the last done because random words are thrown in into regulars while learning. They are random, but they fit in the theme. So, there are completed lessons on the bottom of the Planetarium.
