[App Feedback] My thoughts on the New App Layout

Thanks so much for sharing that!

for example: Iā€™m taking some Thai and Cantonese courses which start with phrases and have the building blocks - words - later in the course. For such courses, the app is a painā€™### to deal with. I almost never use the phone for memrising, but this latest version just blew away any ideas/mood to ever deal with the memrise app. Delete it for goodā€¦

I can only repeat what others wrote, new Android UI is epic usability fail. I am learning 20+ courses in parallel and now

  • I donā€™t see where I havenā€™t reached my daily goal yet

  • I donā€™t see total number of words to review

  • It is harder to just scroll through list of courses and see where I have words to review.

I really hope this new UI will be evaluated as a bug and fixed soon, I love Memrise but now this relationship has strong masochistic flavour.

Thank you so much for this link, although I donā€™t like the idea of fixing an older version (I still hope Memrise will add speed review for image based courses in some new update), now itā€™s really useful option (because this new UI really sucks, how could anybody think itā€™s improvement in any way?).

I started the app today to see the new layout and man, this is confusing. I think I will be mostly able to avoid the planet-things, but I donā€™t really see the point.

Just opened the app and I was rather surprisedā€¦ And not in a good way.

Note that it still is possible to access the ā€œoldā€ list of levels for a course by tapping the flag icon next to the menu button in the top bar. So, we now have two ways to view the level list for a single course, but no way to get an overview of all courses at onceā€¦ As I am learning four courses at the same time this makes reviewing them all very cumbersome.

The old overview screen was completely fine in my opinion. In fact, the entire app was fine. Why was this change needed? Just for the sake of change?

I would really appreciate it if someone from the Memrise team could explain the reasoningā€¦

I hate the new layout. Hate it, hate it, hate it - itā€™s totally unnecessary and complicated where the old version was straightforward. I hate not having an overview, I hate having to go through so many clicks just to review words, I donā€™t need stupid planet animation just to review flashcards! I just want a straightforward language learning app to drill vocabulary. Especially frustrating is since Iā€™m learning Japanese and trying to teach myself kanji recognition - I canā€™t test myself the same if Iā€™m always typing into my computer I need the multiple choice questions that the app favors.

However what I have to say Iā€™m most upset about is the fact that my layout switched without my updating my app? I donā€™t even know how that happens, the first time it changed I sent a scathing email to support and the next time I reinstalled and logged into the app it was back to before, and after that I turned off automatic updating because I knew I didnā€™t want this new layout. I updated it once, a week or so later, and read the whole ā€œwhatā€™s newā€ description looking for any warning that it as going to be a big change but it was all ā€œoh no just small bug fixes, making things run smoothly!ā€ so I downloaded it. And my app was fine, same as before. Something like three days later, I open the app and all of a sudden there are planets everywhere, again. I turned off my updates for a reason! I donā€™t want the new layout, and even trying to reinstall off the backup from my itunes isnā€™t working! Both times the new layout showed up without any warning or any updating, which is both incredibly frustrating and really, really freaking me out.

Does anyone know if thereā€™s a place online to find old versions of IOS apps? I found a link for android but thatā€™s obviously not helpful.

Thereā€™s so many versions to download. Which one is the one before this? And which is for iPhone? Do you happen to know.

???

Thatā€™s android category so none is for iPhone.

Seconding most of it. Overview and usability got completely thrown overboard.
Now a simple task like looking up a certain thing in a course , or even checking which courses you still need to do today, has become tedious and time consuming.

I donā€™t care much for the childrenā€™s bedroom look either, especially since its supposed to be a professional tool. Please get us an option to switch back to grownup style.

Iā€™ve been using the new GUI on my Android smartphone for a day, and I have concluded that this new GUI is definitely worse than the old GUI. Itā€™s not a significant difference, but to get the same information or do the same thing now requires noticeably more swiping, tapping, and waiting than before.

Also, I agree with @humming_bird regarding automatic updates. Automatic updates to the decks and their cards are understandable - because that information is retrieved every time - but does the GUI really need to be automatically updated? Both the old GUI and the new GUI seem to request the same information from my perspective.

It has been interesting to read these responses including from jamus who, like I, as a beta tester reported problems with the new layout. In spite of this, and from the looks of it plenty of other negative responses, they have gone ahead with the changes. Personally, I found the the new layout was sufficiently of an impediment to my learning experience that I uninstalled the beta version and reverted to an old one. I will not update that version until I absolutely have to and perhaps if I am forced to will cancel my subscription. Aesthetics matter and as a for profit organization their job is to produce a compelling product. Nonetheless, at its heart it should be about the learning and not fancy graphics so when those graphics interfere with the learning I think they have lost their way. I hope that, at the very least, they can implement an option to customise the app. It would be a real shame to have to stop using memrise simply because of an interface issue.

Month ago Memrise proposed me to become a betatester because of my heavy usage of appā€¦ Well, now I see that if I would invest my time into it, it would be worthless. Great job, Memrise!

I am really disappointed with the new layout and I donā€™t mean it in a ā€œoh itā€™s new and I initially donā€™t like it but will adjust to it eventuallyā€ kinda way. it is really not useful if you have more than 1 or 2 courses. also there were synchronizing problems which is annoying and broke my super long streak. please do something about it in the near future!!! i need to use the memrise app and this rocket thing is not helping

Memrise team has displayed very poor communication to their users / paying customers! Iā€™ve left beta-testing to avoid this designer exhibition, but now I have to leave the mobile app altogether. I hope that they wonā€™t degrade the web interface too.
If their target group were children under 5, I would understand, but I suppose that Memrisers are mature, or at least young adults. What a pity!

Please:

  • get rid of useless animations
  • save our time and make easier to quickly get to know daily goals
  • improve filtering features
  • allow adding own synonyms or notes (visible during watering) or
  • make it possible to evaluate answers by ourselves
  • set a variable time limit in turbo mode

I didnā€™t uninstall it, but I did install it on a different device that has different Play Store credentials so I got the production version and I find that I am using that one more often. I similarly reported usability and the accessibility and the fact that the lack of summarised information was a real detractor and even a demotivator. The app has become difficult to use. The pleasure became a chore. I still enjoy using the other device though - Iā€™m not sure why it is still currently displaying the old interface, but I am going to enjoy it while it lasts. :persevere:

Not a peep out of Memrise regarding this subject.

Thinking seriously of cancelling my Pro membership when it comes up for renewal.

I couldnā€™t resist but to create a poll to see if there are actually people who enjoyed the update.

Here it is: http://www.strawpoll.me/10305542/

Maybe this will show Memrise staff whether they should continue with this concept.

By my count several paying users including three beta testers have raised serious issues with the current changes to the app. Most of these objections have included specific feedback on useability with suggestions for improvement. As observed above, Memrise has not felt even inclined to respond to these concerns explaining their choices. They claim to be comfortable with psychology (of memory at least) yet they seem to be ignorant of the concepts of psychology emphasising the importance of listening to/taking seriously customer complaints even if they eventually are unable/choose not to address those concerns. This is very disappointing given the really positive messages they give out in their publicity materials. I like Memrise and I want to support them but surely ignoring their paying customers is not the way to build a thriving business.
