Whoa, something went wrong. Might be the aliens again

I’m using version 2.9_3902_memrise on an HTC One M8 running Android 6.0.1 with HTC Sence 7.0. A recent update damaged my App. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it to try to fix the problem. No joy.

Every single time I open the App I get this message (twice in quick succession) in a red box at the bottom of the screen: “Whoa, something went wrong. Might be the aliens again.” Also, if I try to access the ‘You’ section I get the same message. After the message disappears a blue circle rotates in centre screen but nothing else happens, no matter how long I wait. I have no way of checking leaderboards anymore. I can access all of my courses and use Quick Review, Classic Review, Learn New Words, etc. I can also check the leaderboard within each course.

I am really sorry that my msg is off topic, but, jeezie creezie, I really thought it was a joke… what was that, benny and the red pill? teddy and the coconuts? or something

na gut, as long they don’t claim “i’m Captain Obi vOn KeNoB i Grout and I came to take your beans. Hand over the salad as well or else the death star shall make death!”

please, Our Lord Mikkelsen (or should I ask for the Putin Almighty?), let our webversion tarry and keep it free from …

Sorry to hear that but I’m glad to find that I’m not alone! :unamused:

Hi, thanks for the report. I managed to reproduce, it may be linked to your accounts having more than 100m points.

I’ll verify with the Android team.

Many thanks. There’s no similar problem on my iOS devices.

Yes, I would suspect so.

Android has a profile page (which in your case isn’t loading), whereas iOS doesn’t.

Here’s a screenshot of what pops up when I launch. It appears regularly while using the App also.

It’s only a minor irritation… :smirk: but it warrants further investigation… :microscope:

Has this issue been resolved?
It’s happening to me now and I can’t access the app…

Problem solved after log out and log in.
However, now I can’t download courses for off-line use - not that this really worked before, but now it doesn’t even pretend to download them, it gives an error message…
These issues seem to have appeared after the latest update.

Experiencing same problem as of today after receiving an update from the App Store for version 2.9_3956.
And regarding:

I’m only at 4m points…

Also, I’m seconding this:

(possibly) and this:

The app also shows the courses I’ve finished as they were months ago, i.e. unfinished, frozen in time.
Meanwhile, the website shows my progress is not lost, so it’s hopefully just an issue with the app.

Hi there,

Same issue on my Galaxy S7 since yesterday. I tried disconnect/connect again. Now I can use the app but I can’t download any courses as mvkleps says. I hope this problem will be resolved soon.

Hi - Are you able to confirm:

  • Device
  • OS version
  • Course you are trying to download
  • and post any screenshots of the error

Hello,
I’m on Galaxy Note 3, Android 5.0.
Yesterday I got an error message a couple of minutes after trying to download Russian 1, but now there is not even the error message - the download animation goes on, and on, and on, presumably forever… I’ve just tried again with Russian 1, French 1, Italian 1, Spanish 1 and German 1, with the same (lack of) result.
But as I said before, even back when the download succeeded, this feature didn’t seem to work properly - whenever I wasn’t connected, the animations and/or sound wouldn’t play.

Hi,

I’ve been experiencing the same problem on my phone as well. The app comes on but doesn’t load anything (profile and courses) and just gives me the “Whoa, something went wrong…” error message. I’m on LG G4 with Android 6.0.

The exact same thing happened to me a couple of months ago ( nothing would load) on my tablet using android. The only way I could get the app to work was to create a new account. New user name and new email address. I now have an account for the website and one for the app. Certainly not the best solucion but the app works fine for now.

Moto G 3rd Gen; Android 5.1; none; the problem was solved by loging out and loging in, so the problem is no more for now…

Hi - The Offline Mode error should now be resolved. Apologies for the inconvenience. (please let us know if you still experience errors).

Happy Learning.
