I got my girlfriend into using memrise but she is abroad and told me every time she tries to learn from the Greek course she is doing (Greek 1) she gets this ‘go pro’ message that she can’t get past: http://imgur.com/a/ETg0R

EDIT: She told me it’s only with that course, other courses work fine.
EDIT 2: Scratch that she told me now it’s with every course when she reaches level 2…
Tell her to try pressing the bottom grey text in the picture. The one that says: “Nope, gosto de viver no meu mundinho”.

She says she did this, but it keeps her in the ‘garden’ page, and then gives her the ad again when she clicks ‘learn new words’. Seems like some bug or?

and it only seems to be for people who have quite a new account. eg. I started using the app some weeks ago and it worked fine for a few days before I had the same thing. My sister is using it for at least a year and doesn’t have problems.
Btw, I can still review words from the levels I can’t access any more (it happend over night as well, I did some exercises before going to sleep and the day after when I loaded the app it didn’t work any more).
As it is only for newly registered people and only on Memrise’s own courses (user created courses work fine), I am not sure it is a bug (although the website still works).
Plenty of reddit posts on this as well (as well as comments on the android store).
It will certainly scare away most new users as there are plenty of free alternatives to learn a language. If my sister wasn’t so happy with this app, I would probably already kicked it as well (I am using a user created course now).
There are not a lot of people who are willing to spend $50 on a language learning app on which they have learned 8 words before they had to pay.
I have the same problem. I’m new to Memrise and the courses I wanted to learn are blocked starting from level 2. The ad says I should go to premium to unlock. On the website everything works fine. In addition when I start new level on the website I can learn new words from it in application, but still have a lock on this level.
My husband has his account from 8 years and he can learn everything he wants. It’s unfair. I’m very disappointed and frustrated. I had a discount 50% to buy Memrise Pro, but when I reinstall the application the discount disappeared. And I even thought about buying it.
It’s not only unfair, it’s dishonest as they just plain lie on their own knowledgebase page saying learning new words is free:

If I see how old the first mentions on reddit of this problem are (± 2 weeks ago), it seems they don’t really care either.
(btw it did work for me after the reddit post was started, but only for 4 days or something).

Btw, I love the way the app works except that “learn new words” thing doesn’t work any more without paying. I wouldn’t even take the time to complain here if I didn’t want to use the app. It just sucks that I did find a great way of learning a language (and I loved the app) and after 4 days it stopped working and began asking for money without reason. That’s why I am somewhat irritated about it (also because it is taking somewhat long imo).
I hope they can fix it and that it’s not by design. If it is by design, I don’t think the company will be living for a long time any more. I give them 2 years max if they decided that they don’t want the new users any more.
I hope that I am wrong.

I just saw they released a new version of the app, but that didn’t do anything (I had high hopes it was fixed).
The release looks like it is just to brag about being nominated for best app of 2017. It doesn’t even show fixes, I am sure they just upped the version number and that was that.
I am sure by removing the user created mems and not being able to learn anything for free any more (for new users), the app won’t be nominated for the 2018 reward (what a crazy idea to remove the one big stand-out feature you have (the user created mems) right when you are getting nominated for an award for the way your app works…)

i am currently having this problem on iOS. i can’t get past the first level and do not understand what i need to do to advance to subsequent levels. i have done the first lessons and keep getting review lessons but “learn new words” is locked.
