I wonder how many people are being honest. For example, I find it hard to believe that only 30% will use decks.

Well, it’s 30% of the people who actually saw this whole decks update. I imagine the overwhelming majority (who doesn’t know about this) will at least give it a try. Also, don’t forget most people said they have no idea, in which case they could be willing to use Decks.

it’s probably more an issue that the people taking the survey are angry and want to make a point. I’m angry too, but the survey has a couple of questions worded in a way that I can’t answer honestly and accurately. For example, where I live, in general, I can use the online site easily. But at work, specifically iIcan’t, and one reason I got Pro was to use courses offline during my downtime at work.

The other is, " Would you be willing to keep/activate a PRO subscription if this is the only way to continue using the community courses with the Memrise app?" Um, what? When has this even been entertained? I am happy to try to support the community, but community created courses here have always been free and should remain so. Paywalling user-created content, in particular after it’s been free all along, is a big problem for several reasons, especially on a site that has relied on volunteers to create content for this long. I’m not planning to renew of Pro sub because of Decks, but I wouldn’t renew it either if I was being forced to in order to access user-made courses that I’ve been using and had always bee free before. What is this question getting at?

Actually, 30% are ready to use Decks before they (or anybody else) have ever seen this site. I would say it is pretty high percentage, given the latest developments.

I assume you are aware that Decks will not work without a network connection, outside wifi with mobile, if available, pretty expensive.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey.

I’m surprised with the results, although we never can be sure on how accurate the results are.

Anyway, it shows that a lot of users (36%) don’t have a PRO membership, and 17% will not be willing to keep/activate it, if this is the only way to continue using the community courses with the Memrise app. That is not my case.

My conclusion is that there are a lot of different points of view, and also that there is not yet one system that fills the needs of every user, as each language/user is different, and economic possibilities are also different.

I’m sure that Memrise did a lot of study about this change, after all they have a lot of numbers to which we don’t have access, so as we don’t have all the facts, it’s not easy to judge.

I’ll accept the change, and consider this as an opportunity to maybe find something better, as usually…

For those that can pay to learn languages, and can stay connected (although offline mode is planned to the future), doing some research I found the amazing project Fluent Forever. I think their method is way ahead of Memrise or other methods to learn languages. I think their method is the LED light, compared with the Tungsten light that everybody was producing and using during years without questioning.

They got an amazing feedback on Kikstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gabrielwyner/fluent-forever-the-app-learn-to-think-in-any-langu

Here you have a great article about it: https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/18/16483958/kickstarter-fluent-forever-gabriel-wyner-interview-language-learning-app-most-funded-record

For those that can’t pay and really need offline mode right now, it seems that Anki is the most appreciated, and for Android users you also have Memorion that seems to be really nice: http://memorionsoft.blogspot.com

Good luck for all on your learning languages journey!

Hello Ceid,

I hope that you are ok.
Thank you for your feedback.

Just to clarify, I was referring to:

Not to continue using the community courses in general, like using the website Decks, that is the minimum that at least can be done for all the hard work of all community users.

Memorion has been updated, the import of cards has been simplified (unfortunately the learning progress cannot be imported).
