Students can't find the course I made for them

I can’t use the group function (I read here that it doesn’t work anyway) because it would require knowing the personal email or facebook account of all my students, it is not appropriate.

On my version of the android app there is a search function and it means I can find my course easily, but all of them have a different version and there doesn’t seem to be any search function.

I need to be able to show them how to get to the course while in class, so desktop options are not helpful. I’ve explained how to do it with a desktop a few times and so far no one has managed it, because I can’t show them.

How do they do it?

Give them the link?

Also, in the course details, make sure your course is not set to “Incomplete” (only you can access the course), but “Unlisted” (if someone has the link they can access the course) or “Public” (the course shows up in search results).

Someone else wrote that he put a number in the title that helped others searching for the course - like “Advanced Spanish 424242” . (Though you write that they can`t search - which seems rather strange. I guess the search function is well hidden in their apps…).

Yes, Arete. it is set to public.
When you send them a link it opens in a browser, not an app. It doesn’t seem to work properly that way. I could try writing the full (very long) url on the board and see if they can get it to come by typing it in… because clicking through doesn’t seem to work. I guess a url shortener is the way to go

As there is no visible search function on their app they can’t search for the number that I put in the description. Believe me we wasted 10 minutes of valuable class time searching the app for a search function… it’s not there.

It is on mine though! so strange.

It must be a new version of the app?

I managed to get one student as far as my course today. Here is what I had to do:

Tell the student, who had memrise installed, to uninstall it.
go to memrise in the browser, sign in
search for the number I put in the description of the course (course name doesn’t work!)
click course, start learning
close browser, reinstall app

Can you imagine? If the person doesn’t uninstall memrise first then as soon as they log in on the website their browser is closed and the app opens. This is so so so silly… Why would they have clicked the “I’ll use the website” option if they wanted to use the app!
So, of course, linking them to the course is out of the question.

So I have to go through this cumbersome procedure with 14 people tomorrow

facepalm

Don’t open the link on their mobile device browser as they will be redirected to the application.

Open the link on a computer.

If we had access to computers in class everything would be different, of course. We don’t. :frowning:

It took 15 minutes to get everyone on the course today. How do I get the apps to sync? most people still can’t see the course in their phone even though they joined it on the browser.

I won’t be able to do this with new students, the process takes too long and wastes too much class time. I wish the search bar hadn’t been removed from the app. I’ve tried linking the students to it and asking them to do it at home, even the ones who have access to desktop computers (not many) couldn’t do it without me there to help them because they aren’t used to the app.

are you saying that in the app one cannot search for courses??? but one can at least browse all the courses in a category, I hope? (if not, that would be a very clear sign that community created courses are doomed…)

if one can still browse all the courses, and your courses are relatively new, maybe try to scroll down down down - the newest courses are listed at the very end of the list, at least theoretically - like this maybe there is a slight chance one could find your courses

I just checked my iOS app and you can still search for courses in all categories, including the community created ones. I’d be surprised if it was any different on the android app.

I don’t think there was ever a ‘search tool’ on the app like on the web version where you can narrow the search criteria. It was always a matter of scrolling through all the courses to find newly created ones towards the end…which is a bit ‘clunky’.

As I said before, on my app you can search, all 15 of my students have a different version of the app, some have android and some have iOS, and none of these has a search function.

There is still an option to click “courses” and scroll through hundreds of courses until you get to the right one. But I tried this on one student’s phone and I gave up, there are just so so so many courses it isn’t practical.

My “Advanced Spanish” course has 60k users so you can find it very quickly, but the IELTS one only has about 10 people (just 2 this morning!) so it is impossible to find without being able to search for it.

Because it is endless scrolling (worst invention ever) I can’t just jump to the last page and work forwards, and if I give up and go back to it later I lose my place and have to start again.

I appreciate everyone trying to figure this out, thanks

Does anyone know how to get the app to sync with the website?

Sounds like one for you guys.

You don’t need the email address of the students you want to invite to your course. You do however, need their username.

A invitational email will be sent to their email address associated with Memrise.

Regarding how to sync the application, please look at this article: http://feedback.memrise.com/knowledgebase/articles/767382-app-not-syncing-why-is-the-app-not-updating

If they can access one of your courses - it doesn’t matter which one - get them to click on your name and then on your courses. They can scroll down and click on the course you want them to do. That’s what I have to do with my students sometimes.

Thanks Joshua,I can ask them for their memrise usernames next time. Will they get the invite from the app or do they need to go in through a browser? Your screenshot suggests they need a browser.

“tapping the star “pro” tab will sync” I don’t know what that is, hopefully the student in question will be able to find it. o.O

Thanks Brian, I think they need a browser to do that too.

I’d really like stuff that you can do through the app since if you want to use the memrise site you have to uninstall the app. You might say “there is an option on the site to not go to the app” but if you have the app installed it will automatically ignore your choice.

You can see a screenshot showing it here.

Thank you!

The pro icon is at the bottom right of the application.

Could you try opening the link via Google Chrome. I’ve tested with a couple of devices and I was able to access the group feature while the application was installed on my device.

I think asking my students to install alternate browsers is just complicating things even more. I suppose all the android users are on chrome anyway and they are having problems. I saw it with my own eyes! I don’t know what to tell you

Well thats fine, I can only give you suggestion to get around this problem.

Could you also check that when your students or whoever attempts to log into the website via their browser, do not open with “Memrise”. As this will redirect you to the application.

Please look at the attached screenshot.

They didn’t do that (the ones I saw, anyway), they went through the site as far as the log in screen and the second they logged in the app just forced itself open, as described before. As I said, we got around this problem by uninstalling the app completely and then going back into the site. That is not the most time consuming part of all this, every step is time consuming. The only way to make it work quickly and easily that I can see is to have a search bar in the app again.
