Since there has been no indication from Memrise that an Announcement is forthcoming, I’ll just post it here: the old forums will very likely be deleted at some point not very far into the future.
If you know of easy methods to save webpages in bulk, please share.
Want to drop a load of links here you want to save, you are very welcome.
Want to share your negative or positive comments about Memrise in general or its communication in particular, feel free.
Even if we save the text, once they delete the forums, links will all stop working, and people who have links won’t be able to find the text any of us have saved. Without Memrise’ cooperation to at least save all the URLs and put redirects or links at those URLs, we lose.
You can archive individual pages with http://archive.is/, but Internet Archive: Wayback Machine is a much better choice. The latter lets you easily browse through the forum pages and when you see a thread that you want to be archived, just click it and it will let you do so. Make sure to archive individual threads of interest before the forum goes down though, because if you don’t you will just be able to browse the pages of the forums without actually being able to look at any of the threads.
I just archived the forums as they appear today, so in the following links you should click on May 5th as that is the latest archive date for each of them. But like I said each individual thread of interest has to be archived by clicking on them and then it will let you archive them, so make sure to do that.
I also took a look at the feedback section, but unfortunately no one archived it any time recently. The last archive of it is from January 5th and since it is no longer around, there is no way to archive a later version of it.
There was some discussion of these very real concerns a few days ago in the Community Leaders Category. The Forum Moderators said that we were going to get a period of grace before the old forums would be removed, so that we would have a chance to locate and save some of the important historical stuff but, when the new forum was opened up, access to the old forums was lost.
For those who don´t have access to the Community Leaders Category, this is how it was explained by one of the Moderators:
Yes, the forums will be closed and removed, and there won’t be a downloadable version available. This has been primarily a technical decision. The forums themselves aren’t searchable, it’s quite a feat to find anything in them unless you have been using them for a long time and know your way around. I do understand your point about the scripts and other links that could be useful for other users, but I think keeping them in the forums isn’t the best solution.
Like @alahn mentions, we could consider leaving them as read-only for a bit longer so that users could gather all links worth saving. From there, we’d have to figure out if we can dedicate resources to re-organise that content into a new category, or if perhaps you guys as community leaders could populate this re-born user wiki.
On the other hand, the Course Discussion forums (that is, the ones that are located within each course) won’t be removed for now, but we are thinking how to better offer a space where users can talk about a course’s content, and how the course’s creator can stay on top of the feedback they receive."
I hope the Mods will return to this subject soon and tell us what has been decided.
Regarding searchable threads, I remember when typing a topic in the Feedback Forum a list appeared and one could see if it was suitable or if another thread was necessary.
Where is the best place to offer those suggestions again?
It would be sad to lose all those great ideas and suggestions that haven’t been picked up yet.
On ‘searchable threads’, the search button in the top right hand corner provides a similar function to the now disappeared ‘website feedback’ forum. It seems to work OK.
As Arete_Hime says, this is now the only place available to us to make suggestions but be aware that Memrise have stated recently that they are going to be concentrating all their available resources on improvements to the app version of Memrise and will be providing little or no support to the web-based version for the foreseeable future.
I’m very grateful to Nazgul1488 for providing that link to the old forums. If only it had a search facility…
I don’t remember getting an email or anything that the old forums were going away. Did anyone get an email? I hope they let us know BEFORE that delete them completely so we can get what we need off them.
