Old Forum Files

Hello, everyone!

As you hopefully already know, the old Memrise forums, along with every course’s ‘built-in’ forum is due to shut down on July 1st. (See here)

So far, I’ve heard of no plans from Memrise to archive the old forums, which I thought was quite a shame, given the immense amount of time and effort that everyone’s put into their posts there over the years. It’s become quite a treasure trove of knowledge, ideas, and discussions, and I decided that I wanted to do what I could to preserve some of it.

I know other efforts are being made to archive parts of the old forum online, but I wanted to try my hand at an offline approach, where the pages are saved to the computer. A nice bonus to this is that the files’ content is searchable, a feature that was sorely missed on the old forum.

I now have the entirety of the ‘General Discussions’ forum archived, and I’ll be setting my sights next on the forums for each of the courses that I’ve taken.

One downside to this approach is that the whole thing is quite large, with the ‘General Discussions’ forum weighing in at ~10GB (~2.5GB zipped). I figure though that as long as the files are saved, a more practical solution could be implemented later, if necessary. If anyone’s interested, the files can be downloaded here:

Memrise Forums - General Discussions

If anyone wants to help out in saving some other courses’ forums, already has some to share, or wants to make a request for me to try to get to, feel free to post! There isn’t much time left, but I’m going to grab what I can!

Edit: The forums are now down. Here are the remaining files that I was able to collect, with their contents listed below:

Hi @TinyCaterpillar, thanks for starting a new thread.

Firstly the MemRise team (@OliviaZavala) have said they will NOT be saving/ archiving the old forums, so any work you and others can do will be appreciated.

I agree that the existing - soon to go - course forums hold a lot of information that is useful to all users, past and future. (They also hold votes of appreciation which are always nice to read.)

I support several @EasyAcademy courses and because of lack of time on the part of the creator, several borderline queries about phrases haven’t been addressed yet. So I went through all the posts and saved all the unresolved ones to word files (one per course). It took ages to open every post, decide if it was an unresolved issue and then copy & paste the many posts in each thread, finally reformatting them.

I haven’t even stopped to consider saving all the posts on all my other 160 or so courses I’ve created or support.

This bulk saving idea sounds good - if I understand it correctly you just save the web page - but does that save the whole thread? Or do you still need to go into each one (expanding it) then save each one? Then are they all linked or do you have to look in each saved page for an issue? Sounds as if that search could take ages to find what I might be looking for.

If each course has say 50 threads (several have lots more and some are long ones) I think I would be busy from now until the end of the month!

So thank you for what you and others are doing.

Thanks, @DW7! I’m glad I could help.

I used “File->Save Page As…” on Firefox for all of my files. I believe it works similarly on other browsers. It saves the entire page that’s currently displayed, so as long as it’s finished loading beforehand, it should get every post in the thread. In Firefox’s case, it creates a folder for the respective file at the same time, which is where all the media, like avatars, attached pictures, etc. goes. It seemed to break the link between the file and folder if I tried changing the name of either, so I avoided doing that.

My method was to start from the last page in the forum (I actually started around the middle for General Discussions, but only because the earliest threads were lower priority at the time), ctrl+click each thread starting from the bottom, to open them in new tabs, then go through each tab and press ctrl+s, then enter to save. In the case of duplicate titles, I added a “(2)”, “(3)”, etc. to the end. When I was spending the most time on it, I was able to get through around 30 pages (750 threads) in roughly three hours or so.

The files are not linked together, unfortunately, so you would need to hunt down the page you’re looking for manually. The files display as if they’re still on the website, so if you, for example, clicked on one of the ‘recent topics’ links on the side, it would try to go to that url, rather than the respective saved file. What you can do though is perform a search on the folder, to look for keywords in the thread. I can, for example, do a simple Windows search in the folder for “TinyCaterpillar” to find all the threads that I posted in.

Thanks for this! My internet connection isn’t stable enough to download it. I’ll try again overnight.

Thanks @TinyCaterpillar, I am aware of the procedure and that confirms the limitations and time element.

Two tips, I expect you have thought of this, but you can put all items about one course in a named folder.

I think if you rename a folder AND the top level file eg index.html it will then look in that folder for all it’s contents.

PS EDIT Just tested changing both the folder and file name to match, and although it remembers the contents (text) it doesn’t seem to format it the same.

You will need to see if you like it ie can accept it bearing in mind you have now named the two to what you may want. You can always go back by “undo” (Control + “z”) twice until it’s put the file name and folder name back to before.

Happy to help, @Arete_Hime!

Let me know if it would be helpful to upload it again in parts. I know it’s a pretty huge file. lol

Thanks for the tips, @DW7! I’ve been keeping the courses in separate folders, to try to keep things from getting too messy. I tried renaming both the file and folder before, but it still seems to end up as a messed up text-only file, with all the media missing. I suspect there’s a required file somewhere that’s created with the initial file name recorded. It does seem to work though to load the file, then save it again with a different title.

This feature was actually pretty alien to me before I started working on this, so I’m still learning how it works!

Update: I’ve now finished with saving the threads from the forums for every course listed in my “Learning” tab here. I was also able to get through all 42 pages of the “Course Ideas” forum today. (I never knew that forum was so active!)

I’m going to hold off on uploading anything else until after the forums go down, since I want to focus on grabbing everything I can right now. I’ll add the links to the first post when I do.

Again, if anyone has any requests for forums or threads that they want saved, feel free to let me know. I’m making pretty good progress right now, and I’d be happy to help!

Thanks

This is my list of courses - but many are those I’ve assisted on rather than actually created.

If you would be prepared to save some or all of those I have created ( I think that’s 38), I would be most grateful. You may find some have very few threads and comments.

So thanks for the offer but if you don’t get round to it, it won’t matter - there are more important things in life!

That should be doable. I’ll see how much I can get through later today and let you know the results!

Thanks again!

If you do upload some, you’ll have to let me know how to access it.

Glad to help!

I should now be finished with all of your courses. (39 total) As for accessing them, you should just need to download the .rar file and use WinRAR to extract everything. Feel free to ask any questions once it’s uploaded though.

I’ll be moving on to a handful of courses that I’ve been thinking about taking sometime in the future next. Any requests are still welcomed!

Hi @TinyCaterpillar, if you have any spare time and before the posts go (they are still there thankfully), there are a few courses I support where the Creator has deleted his account so the user is “deleted 12345” or something similar.

Could you try to save those threads to, please?

Hi, @DW7.

I’ve grabbed what should be all of the courses you have listed that were made by a ‘deleted’ user. (7 total)

For reference, here’s a list:

  • 15 British Garden Birds
  • Asteroids, Comets & The Solar System ~ Space
  • Basic Earth Science & Space Science
  • Basic Earth Science ~ Geography
  • Earthquake Vocabulary
  • Glaciation & Glaciers ~ Geography ~ Frozen!
  • Volcanoes & Locations ~ Geography (Named)

That’s it for me for tonight (bed time ), but if there are some more requests tomorrow (and the forums are still up), I’ll try to fit in a bit more.

Thank you so, so much @TinyCaterpillar. Hope you’ve had a good sleep by the time you read this.

Thanks also for the list of those “deleted” courses.

Thanks, @DW7!

I suspect there are just a few more hours left before the old forums go down. I’m still taking requests, if anyone has any more!

Update: Well, that’s that. So long, old forums.:cry:

I’ll now add links to my first post for all of the remaining threads that I was able to collect before everything went down.

Thanks for doing this. The JLPT N1 2000 course expressly asks you to read the forum post before starting the course, and now it’s gone.

Such a waste of time and effort to take everything down like that.

Anyway, thanks again!
