Not allowing typing questions

Yep just echoing all of the above comments. Way too easy choosing multiple choice and not actually typing the whole sentence!

at the very least, I would like an option for this. But I do feel the multi choice is too aggressive. It makes me type out for example, ‘‘sich ausgeben als’’ but not ‘‘sich anlachen’’. The moment it hits three words pretty much, it spazzes on you and makes you choose it from a list.

having put a lot of time into building courses and grooming them for over two years now or so - this is a bit alarming. Is this a glitch in the system or on purpose ?
I can see the reasoning behind such a decision but really this should be optional so you can choose whether or not you want this limitation.
Personal if this is left this way I will have spent many many hours in vain. I was actually considering becoming a paid member and wouldn’t mind if the option for typing full sentences is only offered to paying members. But I don’t think I will become a paying member if this situation is not rectified - I can memorize single words on my own and or on other free platforms.
There are many good reasons why being able to type a whole sentence is beneficial - it confronts you with grammar rather than just the matter of memorization.

Thanks for an otherwise truly great website !

I have just activated my account just to say that I do have the same issue and I find it very frustrating now to learn. It’s not demanding enough for me and I feel like I just need to find the first word and the rest will fit. I don’t even bother to read the whole sentence, just select the one that starts with the initial word I suspect it would. Please change it to the way it was before. Do it fast because I want to LEARN and NOT SELECT stupid multiple choice test. LAWL

to be honest, I was also annoyed by some courses where you had to write whole sentences and the course creator didn’t spend much time with alternatives, which is needed for these sentences. These were the only sentences where i was using my phone and the app version (which is horrible when it comes to learning results, because there is simply no effort) to make these sentences by tapping/sorting tests, because i was annoyed of typing those long sentences and having to write them many times again because i had made a typo somewhere or was missing a single word. Yes this was annoying.

But 99,9% of those words that are now affected here in a very bad way are verbs in which more forms and/or prepositions are also given. like ‘to go went gone’ where there is a structure behind it. or ‘to beat someone up’, yes they are also more than 3 words each but these are the words that want to be learned. language learning isn’t just about learning 1 to 1 expressions like ‘house - Haus’.

I spent hundreds of hours creating my courses with around 10000 words and now it isn’t useful at all anymore. It took memrise several months to ‘fix’ the parenthesis/brackets bug and the comma bug and they in the end simply said everything is fine and will be like this from now on, because the creators of the official memrise courses were too lazy to simply add their vocabulary to the system in the way it would have worked but rather adjust the whole system to their vocabulary list.

And now only 2 month later there will be another huge disaster where i am sure Memrise gives a shit about it, because their beginner courses work fine and their users simply have to adjust to it. The users, who were also doing their huge part in making memrise popular by creating own courses.

The current state of Memrise is even worse than what you describe.

The comma & parenthesis bugs still haven’t been completely fixed all these months later. There are still problems that make some strict typing courses totally unusable, because the items contain either answers or alternates with commas or parenthesis, and correct answers are incorrectly marked wrong. Here is just one very recent example of that problem:

And Memrise just ignores the numerous problem reports as they keep on piling up, and compounding the users’ frustration.

It could still be a bug to be honest. The check box to have typing test is still there in the options. It is just not working.

The checkbox is actually about tapping tests, not typing. There are sadly no typing related options available.

Same problem here. I hope it’s just temporary, because this way I can’t learn properly longer words and expessions. For example german nouns, you must learn the articles and the plural form too, not to mention the past forms of verbs. And sometimes I want to learn whole sentences, because it helps me, it boosts my speaking skills (and my spelling and grammar skills too). If there are no typing questions, it is quite useless.
I understand some people like this feature, but everybody learn with a different method, so it should be optional.

Every post in this thread is reporting it as a bug, so I don’t know why you keep saying this as if none of us think it’s a bug. Maybe you are trying to say that it’s somehow unimportant, or should be ignored, but that doesn’t make much sense.

Exactly right.

Geil was right. Actually probably only the people who don’t know Memrise think it is a bug. People who know Memrise and the way they approached things in the past, would rather think this was a planned decision, that now needs a ‘workaround’.

So most people here are just hoping that this is this time really just a bug. I doubt it.

I know what Memrise has done in the past, and the fact that they have made deliberate changes that broke everyone’s courses without telling us first or admitting it after the fact. So I’m not optimistic about the current situation.

But whether they have made this change deliberately, without telling us, or have broken something accidentally, it is still a “bug” from the users’ point of view, because it’s a sudden and unexplained deviation from the previous and expected program behavior.

???

EDIT: I enabled tapping test and that does not even work either. So im pretty positive this is a bug and not on purpose.
Maybe they are in the middle of upgrading something that has to do with typing and tapping etc. Let us all calm down.

Oh, you meant in the course. I meant user settings. I’m not a contributor
to most of the courses I’m taking.

Well it is a good point none the less… perhaps users should have the ability to decide that for themselves too. Not just the contributors. But my point still stands, I just think something broke on accident or they are upgrading something. Or both…

I certainly hope so, because for me this change has practically ruined the site for me, and if it’s not changed back I suppose I’ll just have to quit it.

Well I think it is pretty redundant to take away typing when they already have an audio only feature (for pro users). A part of me wants to be skeptical about all of it and just cry foul, but the logic is that it is unintentional. On the bright side, the site still is up, unlike november… :stuck_out_tongue:

Just adding my voice in case anyone at Memrise is listening. I’m a pro member and will have no use for Memrise anymore if all the longer answers are multiple choice. The typing is where the learning really happens. Please address this Memrise team!

I also wish to add my voice.

I have created a handful of courses dating back 4 years for advanced expressions where many longer answers are involved and typing them out is the KEY to really mastering them.

Why this change ? I can’t seem to fathom.

What criteria are they using to override the presentation of a typing mode instead of multiple choice ?
