My sounds are broken

I uploaded my own source of sounds to memrise (about 1200 words) but all of them were broken. They didn’t have the final sounds while some were just pronounced with one syllable and stopped suddenly. I tested all the sounds in my computer and they were not broken. There seemed to be a problem with memmrise?

Could you tell us which course and perhaps a few entries as an example?

And if you re-download the track to your computer, is the track then also shortened or not?
Steps:

  1. Goto Edit Course -> Hide/Show levels (if you have levels)
  2. At one of the entries that has audio, in the audio column, click the arrow next to ‘1 file’ (or whatever the number of files is for that entry). A small drop down with a speaker icon and a wastebasket should appear.
  3. Right click the Speaker icon.
  4. Choose ‘Safe Link As…’ (I tried this in Chrome; other browsers might have slightly different way of getting it).
  5. Now play the downloaded file on your computer - is it the correct long or the cutt-off short version? If it is the long one, we can simply report to memrise that it is not playing correctly. If it is the short one, you might show us both files and we can tell memrise that the web somehow partially breaks the audio.

The link should be something like this:
https://d2rhekw5qr4gcj.cloudfront.net/uploads/things/audio/160678276_1509172406378.mp3

You might also try to copy/paste it into the browser and see if it plays correctly.

I’ve had it on my phone that with auto play the last 2-5 seconds dropped off a track and move to the next track. I wondered if it could be the mp3; perhaps some software interprets the codec differently and thinks that the track is finished or so. That is something a mp3 developer would know. Then the developers can try.

Let us know what the result is.

Thank you for your prompt support.

I’m an English teacher and I’m teaching my students with memrise. Here is my course link:

https://www.memrise.com/course/1737030/khoa-hoc-toeic-intensive-luyen-de-toeic/

I asked some of my students if they had any problems with the the sounds and the response was mixed. Some told me that everything was just as usual while others told me that sometimes they couldn’t hear the sounds in the audio mode and the words were cut off. I myself had the same problem. For example, with “summary” (level 1 in my course) it was just pronounced like “summer” in my computer.

However, when I did as your instruction and downloaded the audio, it was the long version, not the cut-off one. Maybe the reason is that it is not playing correctly. I hope the problem would be a simple one to solve.

Again, thank you for your help.

One more thing: I have just tested my course in another browser (The Internet Explorer) and the sounds were just fine. Maybe it was the Chrome browser that caused the problem.

OK. Then it is clear they uploaded just fine. I sounds like an issue with chrome. Ask @memrisesupport if they can investigate it and tell if a tweak in the webcode can solve the problem. You message them here on the forum (top right ‘user icon’, click the envelop, fill in ‘memrisesupport’ as ‘to’). Otherwise you need to ask Google for support.,

In the meantime, as workaround, suggest to use IE, Opera or Firefox. Or use the APP. At least inform the students which browser works and which one not. Hope your stds can manage and study hard…

Thanks a lot for your help. I feel relieved now. I was worried about having to reupload thousands of words to memrise. I did tell my students to use another browser instead of Chrome in the meantime. I cannot say how much I appreciate your help. Thank you again

I’m also experiencing this problem as well and it’s completely derailed my learning. I originally posted my problem here before being directed to this post. Have you had any response from Memrise yet? I used to pay for Memrise but I cancelled it when it became apparent Memrise has many bugs and they break stuff frequently.

I’ve got no response from memrise so far. So my advice is that you should learn memrise with other browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer or Cốc Cốc, a browser from Vietnam. There seems to be some kind of incompatibility between memrise and Chrome.

I wonder why more people aren’t reporting this problem? If there’s an incompatibility then surely it should be affecting more people. What’s your operating system? I’m using Linux.

Mine is Windows 7. Maybe it just happened to some people or many of them thought it was the problem of the course, not memrise.

Well, actually t-hero indicates that many of his students experience the problem - they might not reporting it here. We also established that the file stored on the server contains the complete sound. Hence, it seems to me a website problem. Not?
