I am having problems using either Google or MS Japanese IME in Google Chrome. It is working in Firefox but I don’t like the other browser. I also have some userscripts installed on Chrome for Memrise. I updated yesterday Java and after that I was not able to use the IME anymore. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both IMEs - still not working. I have disabled all userscripts - still not working … cleared cache … same.
Anyone else encountered this problem. Or knows how I can get the IME working again.
@GabrieleCramer-Knebe ~ I wish I would have read your note before I did my Java update. I just ran it about 15 minutes ago an then logged into the forum and read your message. I too can’t use an IME in Chrome, but can in Firefox. Luckily I use Firefox for most things, Chrome for few things. That gives me time to sort this all out. The Java update I just ran was Version 8, Update 121.
Arrgh. So far I have not found anything that works. I have reset Java to the previous version after uninstalling it. Have reinstalled both Japanese IMEs - no success. Even uninstalled and reinstalled Google Chrome … IMEs still not working. Running out of ideas.
@GabrieleCramer-Knebe ~ I am sorry to hear that. On my end, things look much rosier. I can now use my Chinese IME again in both Firefox and Chrome (yesterday it was just Firefox). I didn’t do anything special on my end. I just ran my virus checker last night (which I always do after any type of software update), and powered off the laptop for the evening. When I powered on again this morning, all was back to “normal” again.
I’m sorry for your state of affairs. I wish I could offer more for your situation, but I don’t know what else one could do, besides what you already mentioned doing. Just out of curiosity, did you try running a virus scan ? I didn’t find anything on my end, but who knows what it might be doing in the background. Might be worth a try.
Note to others: As @GabrieleCramer-Knebe originally posted, has anyone else using Memrise experienced issues after installing the most recent Java update ? If so, could you please chime in.
@pdao ~I will do the same tonight, shutting my laptop down and hopefully tomorrow things are back tomorrow. I also always run my virus checker after installing new software or any upgrades. It came back that all is save.
@GabrieleCramer-Knebe ~ I am sorry to hear this. Maybe someone who is more technically inclined might be able to offer assistance.
Not to overlook or exclude anyone, but the three on Memrise who come to my mind first are: @Arete_Hime, @DrewSSP and @neoncube. Maybe one of them might be able to provide some insight. They always seem to have a knack of talking techie stuff (that is generally way over my head) and providing useful and creative assistance to a lot of folks on Memrise.
@GabrieleCramer-Knebe ~ not sure if this is helpful or not, but I am running Microsoft Phonetic IME 10.1.7601.0, on a Windows 7 laptop. I use the Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan) keyboard layout on Firefox 50.1.0 and Chrome 55.0.2883.87 m. The Java release was Version 8, update 121.
I wouldn’t know how to type Japanese characters, so I have not installed that layout.
I am running windows 10 on a laptop. Have installed the Google Japanese IME, and the MS Japanese IME that comes with Windows 10 language pack. There are no version numbers on either the Google IME or MS IME
The reason I have both is because I like how switchable Google IME is between Hiragana and Katakana. MS is not that switchable friendly but I need it to enter Japanese Kanji that both not have or recognize because they use different Kanji(s). Google IME does not let me make any changes but MS IME does.
Never had any problems before. I know that Java is the culprit because I installed it in the background while I was going through my Japanese Review. As soon as it was installed the IME was not working anymore using Google Chrome. But it still works in Firefox.
Agree on the assessment that Java is the culprit. My IME worked fine on Firefox and Chrome prior to the update, but only on Firefox after it. Then it began working again the next day on Chrome. Strange.
In between some Zhuyin stuff I am working on, I am also searching some (pretty boring) Oracle forum sites trying to find any kind of mention of issues with the new Java release. But as it is relatively new, there isn’t a whole lot of chatter about it (yet). I hope someone can help you however. In the meantime, I’ll keep looking.
If there is anything we all discovered through our various Memrise experiences, there is ALWAYS a workaround. Sometimes it just takes a while to find it, and to implement it. Hang in there. A solution awaits !
I haven’t read all of this thread, but it looks on first glance that you might not be alone in this issue. Maybe you can read through this and see if any of it seems like what you are experiencing:
I came across that article too when I looked for a solution. The problem happened several month ago and only with gmail client and an older version of MS Office and Acrobat. I went even to the Japanese site that google referred the problem to but also no solution. The only way they stated was do a clean OS install if uninstalling and reinstalling Google chrome is not helping. I really don’t want to do a clean install just because IME is not working. I’d rather do Firefox until the problem solves itself. Hopefully soon.
Agree. I would never do a clean install unless it was a last resort (and an IME issue doesn’t seem to qualify as a last resort). The search will continue again after we go out for lunch…
If I was going to update Java, I haven’t yet because I saw this topic. My process of trying to find a solution would be: do a Google search (within the last week or so at first) for other people that are having the issue; post a question to a forum, like stackexchange or reddit (r/techsupport or r/java maybe) or a popular (learning) Japanese forum; try to find an alternative browser or IME that still works.
Until a solution presents itself I’d just take the opportunity to install a few popular Japanese IMEs and see if they still work.
@pdao and @GabrieleCramer-Knebe, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Java? (The version you have installed can be separate from if you’re running a 32-bit or 64-bit OS).
@GabrieleCramer-Knebe, can you try uninstalling Java 8 and installing the latest version of Java 7 and see if that fixes things? Also, you might want to check to see if there are any Windows updates available. It’s always possible that Microsoft pushed out an update for their IME that @pdao got but you didn’t.
I doubt that Windows’ Japanese IME is written in Java, although Google’s very well may be. Can you try uninstalling Google’s IME and see if the Windows IME works then?
