Lost ability to use Japanese IME in Google Chrome after JAVA update [SOLVED]

@neoncube. Same question that @pdao has. I am a little techy but not enough.

I also tried all your suggestions. But no results. Still the same. Japanese IME not working with Google Chrome.

I think I am running Java 32-bit.

I say this because when I checked my computer settings at Control Panel --> Programs, under all the choices on the screen I have an icon that says Java (32-bit). When I click on it and choose the About option, it displays “(build 1.8.0_121-b13)”

I don’t remember that icon being there prior to the last update, even though I have updated Java numerous times in the past.

Okay. I’m out and about at the moment, but, God willing, I’ll write up something when I get back this evening.

@GabrieleCramer-Knebe ~ We are going out tonight, but if it would help, tomorrow morning I could try to load a Japanese IME, and see if it works on my machine. I won’t need to know how to write any characters, just try something very basic. I would just need to know if it would work in Firefox and Chrome. I suspect in my case it would work, but I’m not a techie person.

@pdao, it sounds like you’re running 32-bit Java, then. I don’t think you need to follow the instructions below unless you’d like to; they’re probably more relevant for Gabriele.

@GabrieleCramer-Knebe, I had to look around for a bit (no pun intended ) , but it looks like here’s a way to check which versions of Java you have installed, and whether they’re 32-bit or 64-bit.

To check, go to the start menu, type in “Programs and Features”, and open the thing that comes up. This should list the programs that are installed on your computer. Then, look for what versions of Java you have installed. For example, for me it says “Java 8 Update 121 (64-bit)”, so I know that my installed version of Java is 64-bit.

If it lists multiple versions of Java, please list those here as well. I also have a couple of versions of the Java SE Development Kit, which could be relevant.

You might also want to try going to a page that uses Java in Chrome to see if Java is working in your Chrome.

It still seems strange to me that the Java update somehow caused Microsoft’s IME, which I think probably isn’t written in Java, to stop working.

I am a very happy person. I started my preview this morning and the Japanese IME on both Google and MS are working again in the Chrome browser. Whatever upgrade @pdao got to make it work I must have gotten it too.

BTW, I have both the 32 and 64 bit version of the latest JAVA.

@neoncube ~ thank you VERY much for your technical knowledge and interjection in this process. You are always a wealth of information !

Have a great day, both of you !

Edit: Sorry, @Arete_Hime ~ I forgot to include your name while giving thanks. Guess it was too early in the morning. Thank you ! Hope you have a great day as well !

@neoncube, @pdao, and @Arete_Hime, thank you very much for all your help.
