I have a large course with over 2k words and over 1k learners. I would like to move a large number of words around levels. Unfortunately, doing this for even a dozen words was painful – my method was to add the word to the new level and then delete them from the old level (deleting them first may delete them from the course).
There has to be a better way to do this than the way I was trying.
Sadly, no, as far as I know. Some of us brought this up on the old memrise forum as a feature request, but they never responded as far as I recall. And on this forum, they’ve told us explicitly that they don’t want to hear any feature suggestions or requests at all, so I expect they’ll ignore it if we ask again. I think we’re stuck with the painful process of dragging things one by one for years to come : (
I would try the following. As bulk add no longer gives results from your own course I think if you only use the first column, bulk add the entries into the new levels that you want, uploading all the columns. Then ignore the new levels and see if any words in the old levels didn’t get ignored. If they didn’t, success, and you can delete the old levels. If they did, fail, and you can see if it is still less work to use the new levels or not.
This does have consequences for your database though. Perhaps doubling the entries in that that after deletion of the extra levels don’t get deleted? I don’t know enough about how the multitude of bugs work to be more certain about that.
I ended up copying the words I wanted to move and pasting them to an Excel sheet, so I could then re-copy them to bulk add them to the level I wanted to move them to.
Depending on how many you need to move it might be easier to delete and re-create the level you’ve moved words from, otherwise I think you have to delete them one-by-one.
Not sure how this impacts the learners though …
I was just about to start writing a feature request for this, but instead I’ll just post here, to bump the topic up.
I often find myself with massive levels that I want to break up into less intimidating ones. Being able to move words between levels would be really useful - especially if the progress wouldn’t be lost.
What I generally do is duplicate the word in the previous or next level, copying it over. And then getting rid of the out of place word once it’s been copied and moved.
Hope that helps.
Granted I’m having trouble naming levels at the moment.
And the grammar components I’m most familiar with are only relevant for ChatBots, not necessarily natural language.
Yes, that works, but it would be nice to have the ability to drag the words between levels just like one can within one. Perhaps by holding down a key to avoid accidentally doing so.
I am also hoping to see a feature to drag words between levels. I made a private course for myself, however it’s now quite extensive and I would like to release it publicly. Most of it’s quite messy and without this feature it will take a long time to tidy up!
Probably the simplest way to do this right now is to:
Generate a text file of your entire course using tech189’s Memrise Scraper tool: Memrise Scraper - tech189's Website
(Pasting the text into a spreadsheet may make the process easier.)
In Memrise, open for editing the the level you want to move items into, open Advanced/bulk-add, and copy-paste the items from the text file that you want to move to that level, then hit save.
Open for editing the level that originally contained the these items, delete those items, then hit save.
If you follow this sequence, the current status (e.g. “in long term memory”) of each moved item should be unaffected, and any audio clip should automatically attach to the item in the new location.
I haven’t used this process for a few months, so I can’t completely guarantee that it still works. But I’m guessing that nothing has been changed recently by Memrise that would affect the process I’ve just described.
if you delete several words in a level they still exist in the database.
Then go to the level you want them in, start typing at the bottom and the whole phrase and information appears.
Not obvious at all, as is the case for most things related to course creation IMHO! Is there any extensive (!) documentation at all (@MemriseSupport)?
I know about the course creation help section, but this is really question-answer based and not comprehensive at all. For instance, there’s nothing on the course detail settings.
Hi @Olaf.Rabbachin. We don’t currently have documentation on this which is ready to share with users. Do you have any particular points or areas of course creation that you’d like more detail on? Thanks!
Not really, rather a proper documentation including walk-throughs. At least all available settins/options should be explained.
Presently, everything is quite unclear resp. vague and often leaves (too much) room for interpretation, which often leads to experiments and can ultimately end in pure frustration …
A documentation would also result in less questions here on the forum.
Whether this is obvious or not I don’t feel it’s an overly practical solution. I’m no computer expert but Memrise is becoming so big and popular I would think that if there is no handy tool for this yet then at least there might be one soon.
Hi Ian, thanks a lot mate. I just used this method with a few test words and it seems to work! Looks to be a reasonable method while they don’t have the functionality to simply drag words directly between levels.
Cheers!
I have tried copying and pasting words both from the text file directly, and also from a spreadsheet where I re-organised all the words. However, only about half the words seem to stay in the long term memory, which is a bit unfortunate, as I’ll have to ‘re-learn’ all of these to put them back into the long-term memory. Has anyone else had this problem when using the text scraper?
Ian, I followed all the steps you listed aside from deleting the words from the old level (as I do not want to do that until I am sure all the words will stay in the long-term memory). I am assuming I have an issue from my end, as I agree that as you noted it is unlikely Memrise changed something to affect this.
Hi, the only thing I can think of is that the duplicate items might not be truly identical to the originals - even if they appear to be identical when using the courses.
In edit mode, look for extra space or tab characters that may have somehow been inadvertently included (or deleted) in the new versions of the items. And check that everything is identical for each item, including the translation, part-of-speech (if included) etc.
