I’ve just logged back into Memrise after being away for a few months and I’m feeling rather disoriented. I’ve spent the last half hour trying to figure out how to add a new mem onto a word/phrase, but the “Add Mem” option does not seem to exist anymore. Could someone please walk me through how to add mems in the new (desktop) layout?

Sadly, the new (Beta) format doesn’t currently have a mem feature. The Memrise guys have said that they are considering how best to re-introduce it into the new format. There’s a brief comment about it in the “Memrise Labs” section of the forum (in the “Launching Classic Review alpha” topic).
Currently, you can still do what I do, which is to turn off “Beta” in your settings and revert to the previous format, where it’s still possible to create and see mems.
Hopefully they will come up with a long term solution that allows us to see mems in the new format. For me (and lots of other users) they are an important part of the learning process (and one of Memrise’s USPs). During my time on Memrise, I’ve created almost 1400 mems and would really hate to lose them!

Very sad since SRS (Spaced Repetition System) and Mnemonics are by far the best ways to learn things.
Memrise only has Spaced Repetition now. They have taken the Mem out of Memrise.

Thank you for the information. That’s what I was afraid of…and it’s really a shame, because the mems were really the only thing that set Memrise apart from other language apps. Hopefully they figure out a way to reintroduce them, or if not, another app comes out to fill the void.

hmmm is it just me but memrise beta mode has taken a downfall

I certainly understand the need to make changes and keep things up-to-date. But removing a key feature seems like a big step backwards, which seems hard to justify.

I’m so glad someone asked this. I’ve been going crazy trying to find this feature. As most of you have pointed out, mems were the only feature that separated Memrise from other systems. I always think of the swahili word for "kijivu " that had a drawing of an elephant with the two straight tusks and curved trunk emphasizing I-J-I. I hope I can get back to the old system, and that they don’t change it. And BTW, email help, didn’t.

Yes, this is really ridiculous. The whole neurological basis behind Memrise and what makes it a valuable application is the creation of mems. Without this it just becomes another rote learning site. Thanks for the tip on turning off Beta!

For some reason i cannot turn off beta even if i want to. beta is so annoying.
I was just about to create a new course based on images of comic books (pictures of where the word was used) and I encountered this problem. I notice I can still add memes on my phone, which isn’t in beta.
Does have another platform which they recommend where meme’s can (and will, fingers crossed, remain) integrated?

It may be that you have got “Memrise Labs” turned on in the “Learning” area of your settings. If so, try turning that off as well.
I’ve just come back after a few years away- decided to get to grips with Spanish- and can still remember a handful of words from a quick look years ago- thanks to the memes. What do I find? NO MORE MEMES! Absolutely unbelievable- the one thing that made Memrise useful has been removed.
Thank you. Had to turn off Beta. I’ve been creating new mems for Norwegian (1 and 2 so far) as I work through the courses. It would be a real shame if no one else could even see or use them.
Are there any updated instructions for opting out of Memrise Labs? I can’t seem to find the option under the Profile or Learning sections.
Edit: I’ve found a Help Center article that states that this is not possible:
Unfortunately there’s no option to disable the new web experience and revert to the old format.
Has anyone else had any luck? Perhaps people who had previously opted out still have the old experience?

Based on what they told us several months ago, I’m fairly sure the entire point of this process was to allow them to delete what you’re calling the “old experience” - it’s gone gone gone, it’s not in their codebase anymore. They were trying to simplify and remove features (supposedly features that will come back in the future) as part of disentangling classic community memrise from their newer langauge app, so they can separate the two. When the two are really separated, then they can work on them independently of each other - though they’re not planning to put any significant effort into the classic memrise platform, they will at least be able to make changes or bug fixes to it that don’t affect or complicate the mobile language app that they care about.
Anyway, I’m fairly sure the “old experience” is completely gone and deleted by now from the live servers. The code for it is just not there, it’s not a matter of whether you can “switch” to it.
