Genki I: You Can (Not) Advance

I’m taking the Genki 1 Vocabulary & Kanji course, because I’m also enrolled in a real-life class that’s using the Genki 1 book, and find this to be an amazing resource.

There’s one part that’s vexing me, though: “Listening Skills”.

I simply cannot advance past the early levels. Although I’m on Lesson 10 vocabulary, whenever “Listening Skills” comes up in the rotation, it’s going to present me the same dozen words or so over and over and over again: enpitsu. pen. doa. tsukue. mado. kaban. moichido itte kudasai. hon. isu.

I learned these words over two months ago, but I still get them in each and every session (and I use the app every day), and “Listening Skills” won’t quiz me on stuff I’ve learned more recently. I answer these really old words correctly, of course; I haven’t messed up any of these in a long time. But still they keep coming.

Sometimes I get the same word twice in a row, with the same question format.

Is this a known bug?

As an experiment, I’ve added enpitsu to my “ignore” list, and it no longer shows up, but the other early words continue to come back again and again. I don’t want to ignore them all as I would eventually like to see them again, at a decent SRS interval - but not every day.

One thing that might be a bit odd about my usage pattern is that I skip over the Kanji lessons, as I’m using Wanikani to learn kanji (level 11 there, I know about 300 kanji by sight). Could skipping lessons be confusing the algorithm?

I can get into listening skills for my current level (Lesson 10 in the book, which is towards the end of the course) by going directly into that level from the main menu. The first time listening comes up in the rotation, it’ll be the current lesson, but after I’ve done a few more exercises, it’ll eventually throw me back into the beginner levels.

No other exercise type does this. Speed Review, Classic Review, etc., give me a good mix of current content and content from levels completed just a few days ago.

I run Memrise for Android on a Samsung phone, and have a Pro subscription.

ありがとう!

Hello. Maybe your problem is a bug in the Memrise app, described by MemriseMatty. If so, he informs that they are already investigating. See the topic below:

If it is not, it is good to add a link from the course you are doing because there are several Genki courses, created by different users.

がんばって!

ありがとうございます, Milamyさん! It’s a relief to know that it’s not just in my imagination, and that it’s a known issue that they’ve been alerted to.

I’m using Sputnik1220’s
Genki I (Genki 1) Vocabulary & Kanji

I’ll add a comment to that other thread too.

thanks, matt
