I just want to rant a little, knowing it will not make any difference.
Once I have completed a course I cannot reset it to re-learn the word/phrase. Classic/speed review essentially assumes that I KNOW it. I don’t know it, I need to PRACTICE it.
Pre-Early Access the structure felt perfect. I never felt like I was learning anything from Duolingo or Drops, but Memrise was helping me learn so quickly and confidently. This is because of the topic structure - 1, 2 and so on, and it could be repeated - which is necessary for learning. Now it is a bunch of topics to work through and move on to the next one.
If I go to the ‘Practice’ area, complete a review, I am then taken back to the dashboard page. Why would I want a dashboard? I’m here to learn, not look at statistics. Make the dashboard an option, not the default.
Pre-Early Access the structure was building up words into phrases, and on to longer phrases, so that it was easier to digest. Some of the ‘beginner’ topics now go from one word to complex 8-word phrases without any explanation of the words and their usage.
It’s all feeling like “right idea, wrong execution”. I do have to wonder what the customer feedback was prior to this change, it would surprise me to hear that it was positive. To be clear, I LOVED using Memrise for the past few months. But now I am not sure about renewing my subscription as it’s just frustrating to do basic things now.
I thought the same thing with my Spanish (Mexico) course, along with many other deficiencies. I gave up trying to learn with Early Access. I understand your frustration. I’m a new life-time member, so, I’m not happy either.
So far it seems to be awful. The beauty of memrise was that it taught you essential vocabulary and gave you a good basis for learning more. The new format is the same as you can find anywhere on you tube
My biggest feedback so far about the Early Access is that the membot consistently says Niña instead of Nia when I tell it my name, and that I am very not impressed that you can only review words once you finish an entire scenario.
Some of the scenarios are 60+ words long, and there are issues if you do a smaller amount of new words per day, lets say 5 words per day. With 5 new words per day a 65 word scenario would take 13 days to complete, 13 days without being able to review the first parts of the scenario means that it’s easily possible to forget some of the material before you even get a chance to practice it. This also leads to review burnout because it instantly queues up a ton of reviews right after you finish a scenario.
Please let us review words in our regular practice directly after they get the flower/learned, it will make everything so much less abrasive and discourage overloading ourselves by taking on more words per day than some of us are capable of just so we can start to get reviews on words we have learned. This is a major step backwards. Aside from these few things, I like the new version.
I paid for a lifetime membership to Memrise, and I really want to see it improve, but it’s very concerning that basic things like that are overlooked.
Edit: Some of the speakers also sound very quiet, while others sound very loud during the exercises on the Spanish (Spain) course. The volume difference between the loudest and quietest speakers is quite distracting, and having the volume loud enough to hear the quiet speakers makes the loud speakers deafening.
I really wish after a few minutes I stayed in the old memrise. It is better, the new look is weird. Everywhere it says, pro this, pro that. Gives me the feeling it is more pro than free. Also the look and feel is pretty annoying. The help says I can go back to the old memrise, but I cannot. The menu item simple doesn’t appear. If I say no to pro, pro lessons shouldn’t be available. I am someone who follows the path, left to right. But most the items seem to be pro items, which I cannot use and not willing to use. I simple cannot afford it. I also don’t like talking to bot, because they are known for more data breaches than human kind has done in it is entirety. But in seconds. Right now I don’t see anything useful in memrise for me. Not in the new version at least.
@Olaf.Rabbachin - In this case the website should be working first. And yesterday there was no way back to community courses / classic memrise. I triple checked everything.
And furthermore Spanish 1 etc. are moving to the new experience. I thought community courses won’t? Probably another point why someone should leave memrise.
I’m still working on both official Memrise courses as well as community courses across a bunch of languages (I’m using Android) without any problems!
RE community courses: from what Memrise employees wrote here on the forums, these should stay in the “Classic Experience”. My assumption (!) is that they’ll eventually move all their “own” courses over to what’s now “Early Access” but, as with most things Memrise, that might take a while (if we’re lucky).
Not sure about the seemingly empty screenshot. Again, I didn’t have any problems on Android yesterday/Sunday.
Hopefully they all stay in the classic memrise mode.
RE screenshot: This is what the website of memrise, where my Dahsboard should be, look like right now on my desktop access. (Web Browser) Tried different browsers but website behaves as silly as my screenshot says and displays only a white background.
No problems here with the website (in classic), both with (latest) Chrome and Firefox.
I’m afraid I won’t try switching over to Early Access, maybe someone else can cross-check.
Edit: try and hit Ctrl-F5, that should “hard re-load” the website (avoiding the cache).
This used to be a problem with courses with too few entries to create alternative - especially if entering small levels at a time.
Then one is left with those alternatives and it was hard to reset alternatives.
But I assume this is something new and unexpected in a course that was previously fine.
You can see in my screen recording that the problem sometimes carries over to the next question. Three (identical) answers from the previous question are already selected and green from the start. The other answers that are still selectable have as only option the actual answer.
