Courses *suddenly* requiring either hyphens or even strict typing

this is really unbelievable… the same bug again and again and again…

Strict typing is back again. I couldn’t use the site for nearly two weeks because of this bug, and now, after only four days of it finally working, it’s back. Pathetic. How, when it’s broken more often than not, is anyone supposed to rely on this site?

Ah I am gathering all the problems for typing and tapping. Can someone please help me complete this by following this form?

Give me the course that you are taking or reviewing
Give me the type of test that you are taking
Give me an example of your sentence
Give me the expected behavior that you want
For example,

Hyphen not working specifically in @diegovizia 's The Ultimate Kanji Course.

Edit: Nevermind… seems to be working now.

The COMMA bug is back

whenever the response is xxx, yyy, zzz

before you could respond xxx

and it was correct

or yyy

and it was correct

or zzz

and it was correct

now you have to type all xxx, yyy, zzz

so either users can start learning the enitre list all over again or ignore the card because it is just a hassle.

so many courses were built understanding the old technique that now many cards are broken.

bouhahahahah, grrrrr, such a shame

not happy

good morning,@flamantrose (no offence intended, just a silly tiny pun). Read the last third of this: comma does not function as separator anymore, huge work in front (“für lau”/ solely for your personal glory in the memrise heaven, or hell) for many a course creator: Has there been a change in the way memrise treats commas?

good evening @Hydroptere

Yes in fact I’ve just spent 15 minutes on that thread thanks!

Since before the “web version blackout” last week, I perused my own courses to accomodate by using alternative answers with the parts when I saw there could be somme difficulty.

I still have some “work” to do there. But most of my own courses are intact regardless. Some of the other courses I am taking are not.

And from what I can see from the thread, there are many courses that are suffering more from this change and it is a real shambles.

A real wake up call as you put it!

I just try to remind myself, what counts is not the Memrise database but what remains in my own mind.

Albeit, I would love to download the data from my courses  with or without commas…

Hang in there

yeah, thanks…

for the Latin courses, for ex, this is a disaster.

(and Memrise decided synonyms don’t matter and should not be learned (there is only twitter language on planet earth…) and typing … typing? who needs typing, google leads us to the world of vocal commands, good beware of writing, writing is only for obsolete… humans…)

To get the • symbol. You have to make sure you have the Japanese keyboard turned on and press the shift and ? at the same time.

Ah, Thank you very much. Yes, I have the Japanese Keyboard but was not aware of the keystrokes to make that • symbol.

Hello Hung-Phan:

  1. I am learning new words and reviewing words in the German course “5000 Words (top 87%) sorted by frequency”, as an English speaker. http://www.memrise.com/course/47049/5000-words-top-87-sorted-by-frequency/
  2. This applies to all the tests (except the ones which ask for selection of one option among a choice of complete answers).
  3. An example would be: Translate from English to German “the house”. Answer required: das Haus, -"er
  4. The behaviour that I want is that typing just “das Haus” would be an acceptable answer. The creators of this course have stated that the “strict typing” is turned off, and it should not be necessary to add the plural endings.

This was working a few days ago without having to type the plural endings, but now (in the browser version) the answer is rejected if plural endings are not typed. In the mobile (Android) version, plurals are not required.

I apologise if I am in the wrong thread on this forum, since the plural requirement is a bit different from the issue about commas or word order, but it seems to me that it is another expression of “strict typing” rules being enforced when they should not be.

Hi @misxifRM, Has there been a change in the way memrise treats commas? this thread may be long but if you scroll to the last one (using the scroll bar). There is a question about the same course. Additionally, you can see the the table in post Has there been a change in the way memrise treats commas?. That is what we support now.

Thank you @hung-phan for pointing me to the other thread.

It seems that this thread and the other one are discussing the same issue. As @BenWhately has explained, Memrise is re-working the platform to make it suit more recent joiners who prefer to use the mobile platform, and in the process is changing the way in which community-created courses are being interpreted.

I have a better idea for tracing down all the problem. Please follow the instruction on the post and tag me in if you want me to investigate your problem.

I still have the problems with the “,”. In my course I usually offer both answers in English British and American as correct. Before you just had to type one not both of them.

What am I suppose to do? Introduce manually both of them as altervatives valid answers?
That would an insane amount of work.

I’ll give you an example. In my Spanish English course you have the word ENDAVOUR (brit) and ENDAVOR (Am) spelling as in “Esfuerzo = endavour, endavor”. Am I supposed to type the whole thing (“endavour, endavor”) to get the correct answer?

HELP PLEASE!

According to the new guidelines (as far as I understood them) a semicolon or / should be used to separate alternatives. Commas won’t work anymore.

Hello ReParker, I don’t want to be nit-picking, but FYI, you have missed out a letter ‘e’ in your two versions of the word endeavour/endeavor.

@ReParker
I hope this explains:

I have replaced commas with semicolons in this course http://www.memrise.com/course/758110/1-the-city/ ; now it is asking for strict typing??? Also, I have problems recording audio in this one…
