[Course Forum] Japanese 1-7 by Memrise

Ah, I see. I didn’t realize you could add courses to the app like that. derp
That makes a huge difference. I seriously appreciate the help @88Timothy!

@relyat08 @88Timothy

Updates on the new versions of the courses:

Full script course - (uses Kanji, hiragana and katakana) 1-3 to be released soon, 4-7 to be released later
All items will be presented in full, Japanese script
Example: 私はイギリス人です (I’m English)

Romaji course - (no script whatsoever.) 1-3 to be released soon.
Example: Watashi wa igirisujin desu (I’m English)

I’m sorry for the inconveniences caused while we put all our resources in the new versions.

No problem. I didn’t realize the unofficial courses like what 88Timothy linked me were available at all. Now that I know, I am much more content and back to my normal schedule of studying.

Are you guys then taking the old Japanese 1 - 3 courses off. Or is there a way to figure out which one are the old ones and which ones are the new courses?

Hello!

The plan is that older versions of the courses will still be available for people who are already learning the courses; however the old courses will not be visible for the new users.

Older versions will eventually be deleted, but they will be available for a while to allow the existing users finish the course or make a switch. Thanks!

Yay! I’ve been excitedly waiting for this since the first announcement! Thank you so much for your hard work! ( ノ^ヮ^)ノ ∼ · *.• °✧

I can’t use desu. For example, when it tells me to type in english character, all of it is correct exept for when I get the the desu part and then my answer is partually wrong. Please fix this because I am not getting my points.

Hi Kennedy,

Can you elaborate? Is it tapping test or typing test? Do you remember which item it was?

Hi. I’m new here so apologies if I am getting any of this wrong. RE: Japanese 1:
've just been doing reviews and there seems to be a bug with “choushiwadou”/“chiyoushihadou”. There is an inconsistency where memrise requests “what’s up” as the question, but then will accept one of the answers and not the other (seemingly randomly).
I have been using the second (as its closer to the correct translation of the hiragana), but will randomly be marked wrong if it wants the romaji - but doesn’t tell me. Its asking for both answers “in Japanese”, which is really confusing. If it comes up again I will grab a screenshot.

Hi Mariko,

I’m curious how the course will work to input kanji on the reviews involving typing - will it be similar to the Japanese Google Keyboard where words typed in hiragana bring up suggested kanji words? Or will there be no typing items? Now that I’m proficient with hiragana I’m actually looking forward to going through 1-3 again to now learn the accompanying kanji and how to compose with it.

Hi Bryan,

The choices on app screen will be one kanji in each box ie if you have 調子はどう?the choices may look something like:
子 ど う 調 は ?
but if you have Japanese keyboard installed on your phone, you can type it in using the Japanese keyboard style.

Is my perception correct that we’ll have a while longer to wait for the new 1-3? At least when compared with your anticipation of pending release back in November. I’m trying to make a plan with five months to go until I return to Japan, and am at a bit of a crossroads. On top of 1-3 I’ve now memorized the Genki 1 vocabulary and am going through the workbook, plus reviews of 1-3 and Katakana. I’m now looking to find time for an additional half hour of daily practice, but I’m not sure whether to keep waiting here or dive into one of the JLPT N5 courses. Any thoughts?

It can’t hurt to do the N5 course can it?

In Japanese 2, Level 4, “to understand” has the Japanese “わたしはわかります”. This reads to me as “I understand”, and the audio also simply says “わかります”. Removing the “わたし” at the start would fix it I think, since the audio matches.

Well of course, it can’t hurt to learn anything. It’s more a question of being strategic with my learning and creating a road map/goals going forward. I also ask for an update given that I bought a pro membership months ago on the premise of what appeared to be the availability of a fully fleshed out 1-7 course (versus considering other spaced repetition systems which can also run decks for N5, Genki, etc). For now at least, I give the benefit of the doubt because the communication has been so strong from Mariko in this thread.

Hello! This is fixed. Thanks for letting me know!

Hi! I hope everyone is having a great start to the week :sunglasses:

Just dropping by to give updates on the Japanese courses. The full script course 1-3 is done, and has been placed in the queue to be uploaded. My part is done and I’ve handed the course to the tech team, who I believe will upload the course within a week. The romaji course 1-3 will be released in the following weeks (the content will be same as full script 1-3).

I’m sorry to inform you guys that 4 - 7 is not going to be available in this release. I honestly cannot tell you at this point when Japanese 4-7 will be ready for release.

I do agree with @Bryan_Gilstein8, that while no learning is ever useless, there are strategic ways of planning the process; and I admit that we have mispresented this course to have all 7 sections available from the start. While I appreciate all your support through buying the Pro membership, I want everyone to be happy with their experience with the app! I hope this update helps you plan your learning better. Thanks.

Glad to hear you have everything prepared for Japanese 1-3. I think you have done an absolutely amazing job connecting with the community here and actively fixing the course, and I think we all appreciate all the work you have done. We have waited this long for the full script course 1-3. We can wait more for a well done 4-7. Just wanted to say thanks for your hard work, and that I look forward to trying your Japanese 1-3 full script course! お疲れ様でした!

Also met the “water” one…can this be fixed? I am getting a “difficult” rating for a kanji that is not difficult at all, i just miss the correct answer because there’s always 2 identical answers.
