[Course Forum] Japanese 1-7 by Memrise

The audio for this one was actually fine, it was just that the lower “kanji” translation, in the box, does not match what the hiragana above reads. If that is indeed fixed, thank you very much!
The one with the audio issue though, is ハグして、which has the audio for 私のお母さんも時計を欲しがっています。instead. This might only be when the woman speaks, because I seem to remember what the guy says to be accurate, it’s just a weird little hick-up, I guess.
Just logged out and back in and the おす and ひく translation problem has been fixed. Mostly. The wrong translation was removed, but hasn’t been replaced with the right one yet. I like having the bottom translation a lot, so hopefully that’s just coming in a second. Thanks!

Soo, not to be too spammy, but I was essentially unable to use the app at all today because the bottom translation, aka what I refer to as the “kanji translation”, in the little box that I will highlight in a screenshot, is entirely missing. Not there at all. I really hope this will be fixed soon, as that is basically the main reason I use this app, and subscribed, over other options. Most apps don’t seem to have any focus at all on kanji, unless they are kanji specific, so I loved that I was able to learn kanji more contextually through Memrise up to this point, disbarring a few errors here and there, of course. This is going to get fixed soon, right?? :sweat:

Don’t worry you’re not spamming us! Neither of these issue you reported (lack of kanji box AKA attributes / push/pull not being fixed) are reproducible from my side. I’m sorry to be a pain but please could you uninstall the app and install again?

Okay, I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but I’m still having the same problem. :confused:
That kanji translation is still not there at all. I’m also getting this literally every couple of questions…

Thanks for trying! This seems to be a technical issue instead of a content one that I can fix. so I’m going to report it to the relevant team. Can you tell me which device you’re using?

Okay, I thought it might be. Thanks for the help and sorry to make you shuffle around! I’m on the Galaxy Note 4, Android OS.

Out of curiosity, would it be possible to see what the app looks like on your end? Can you send a screenshot of what the app looks like? I’m confused as to why this isn’t something you can replicate. It seems to be a pretty massive change to the system, with kanji translations just not there, like I highlighted in my screenshot.

There is a small “+” symbol that I can open now, but only on the homepage for each translation, so it’s useless during tests, or any other feature of the app. This seems to be a systemic change, for some reason, but it’s not really something that I can work with, since I have to manually open the translation and can’t look at the kanji on any other page. This is super frustrating. Is there a better place for me to articulate my issues? I honestly don’t think I’ll continue my subscription if I can’t use the kanji translations like I was before. :confused:

Hi, can’t finish Japanese 2 like other guys here. It seems the course actually only has 454 words - the application says “you’ve completed this course and there are no new words to learn. Try a different course” and website says “The page you are trying to get to doesn’t exist”. still, the header is “454 / 455 words learned” and there is no 455th word. I have English UK set as the main language if it matters. I wonder if it is possible to complete this course in any other languages?

I posted this topic elsewhere but it hasn’t had any traction in a week so I thought i’d post it here, since it probably belongs here anyway.

So in Japanese 1 we learned that ふ was spelled “fu” so I assume the course is using Hepburn Romanization, but in Japanese 2 It is only taking “hu” (for some words) as correct spelling which suggests we switched to Kunrei/Nihon-shiki. Can we please either pick one or accept either answer? It’s really frustrating because the “correct” spelling of ふ. changes from word to word and it’s hard to keep track of so I end up repeating the same words over and over.

Another issue i’m having is that sometimes the “you/I” is implied and sometimes it isn’t (currently in Japanese 1 & 2). It’s frustrating trying to remember what sentence does and does not have it. I do think it is a bug though because as you can see in this screen shot the “youの” is written under “Literal translation” but if you type in the “anatano” it says you’re wrong.

I think when the subject pronoun shouldn’t be typed in the Japanese translation it should be in brackets. For example:

Question - "What’s (your) telephone number?

Answer - "でんわばんごうはなんですか

We shouldn’t have to remember which specific examples include a pronoun because most of those examples do not usually use a pronoun in natural spoken Japanese anyway.

I agree, but I’d settle for anything that is consistent.

I completely agree. I am constantly adding the pronoun when I shouldn’t. With so many sentences it is difficult to remember when the pronoun is asked for and when not.

The other problem I am having is when the polite form is asked but I read it as wanting the verb or adjective form, e.g., “to do”, I usually type "する”but it wants “します”. Can you please add in parenthesis (polite form), or just (polite) then I/we know which form to use…

So, it appears that the kanji with the plus sign is a “new feature” or something. And that I will no longer be able to learn kanji contextually like I used to. Can you confirm this for me? or show me a screenshot of the app or your end or something?so I can understand what you mean when you say you can’t replicate my problem. This really seems to be a new feature. I even got one of those hints like the “abracadabra” thing I posted where it mentions that being a feature. But it’s a massive downgrade over what the app previously did in showing the kanji as a secondary translation on each page. I really need some confirmation about this because I have no been able to actively study Japanese using the app for several days now and need to cancel my subscription and find an alternative app for kanji quickly if that is the case. I simply can’t use the app if my only option for repetitive learning is the useless hiragana translation. I am learning Japanese so I can read it, I NEED to be able to memorize kanji this way.

  • I have confirmed with the team that attributes (AKA kanji boxes) not showing is indeed intentional and is not a bug.
  • No further work is going to be done on the current versions of the courses.
  • Inconsistency in presentation a) some words presented in polite form and some words in casual b) pronoun situation are going to be fixed in the new versions of the course.

@MarikoMiz MarikoMiz I see. In one of these new versions that are apparently coming, is the kanji box going to be coming back at all? That really sucks to hear. Your app is the only one out there that had a feature like that. Making it the only app really suited to learning kanji contextually for reading purposes through repetition. There are dozens of apps that teach vocab and stuff using hiragana, but literally nothing other than the past version of this app that was useful for learning Japanese reading. In preparation to cancel my subscription I’ve been looking for something to replace it, but seriously nothing else exists(if you know of something, let me know). Anyway, is there a way I can be refunded for my subscription now? I don’t really have a use for yet another hiragana focused vocab app. :frowning:
(just another note, I mentioned it previously that I’d like to see something that hides the hiragana translation, and then this happened that hides the kanji translation. If something like that is possible, Why not have an option where you can hide or show the kanji box depending on what the user prefers? I was making fantastic progress by hiding the hiragana translation(or the english translation depending on the test) using my finger during tests and only relying on the kanji translation for the last couple of months, but now I’m screwed and don’t know how to progress.)

Are you aware there are tons of Japanese courses on Memrise that do just what you want? For instance I recently started this one: http://www.memrise.com/course/122927/jlpt-n5-readings/. It’s a godsend after all the hiragana from the official courses. :wink: A lot of them have audio too. It’s just the official courses that don’t use kanji.

Also, the new official courses are supposed to be based on kanji, so we’ll see how that works out.

Well SNAP! 素晴らしい! That’s much much better! I just did one quick lesson and it doesn’t seem to be exactly the same format and layout, but it IS pretty great! And it accepts kanji AND hiragana for some answers! Fantastic. :smiley:

Is this available on mobile by any chance? I’m guessing that’s why I never knew this existed, since I’ve not really used the desktop version of memrise at all(mobile is primarily where I used memrise, since I’m at work most of the time while studying…). This will have limited usability if I can only use it on desktop, but still great, even so.

And yeah, really hoping the new official course they mentioned that is based on kanji will work out. And not take too long to come to fruition!

Works fine on phone as well, both with multiple choice input (you get some hiragana and/or kanji to choose from) or direct input with your Japanese keyboard.

The one I posted prompts both common Japanese vocabulary and the reading of this common Japanese… well, the course itself explains it very well in the first level. :stuck_out_tongue: There are also some variations, and of course many other courses depending on your level.
