Are the official German courses worth it?

I’m quite new to Memrise and I see a load of people complaining community courses were removed and only the official ones are left. Should I then use the official courses anyway (because I really want and need to learn German) or should I wait for Memrise to (hopefully) put back the community courses and use those ?

Start with the memrise official courses (they do have some neat features) and then move over to Decks (the sister website of the memrise app as from some time in March) where you will find the community courses. There are some great German courses, really extensive and that have been worked on and improved by quite a few people over the years.

Unless you want to learn the basics no

Go with Duolingo IMO. Official German course on Memrise is really weak

I think the official Memrise 1-7 course is pretty good. The “learn with locals” videos are of inconsistent quality, but they are a nice feature. The one huge, glaring problem with the official course is NO MEMES! The memes are what really help me learn the hard words that have no obvious association with my native language. I give the official course 7 out of 10 stars for German A1-A2, but that number would be much higher if they had memes.

The correct term is “mems”, actually, but that aside, I totally agree with you about the lack of mems on official courses. You can make your own, which you will see, but you won’t see anyone else’s.

How can you make your own? I have not noticed how that can be done.

I really enjoyed the Grammar bot in level 5 or whatever. I wish there was more grammar in German 1-7.

Hi @TLearns

You can add a Mem during the “learning” or “preview”:

Durint the “learning”:

If you do not know where the “preview” is, I’ve put an example below:

If you need to edit later, there is an explanation here:

Thank you, @Milamy. Is this also possible on the app?

@TLearns,
I’m sorry, I’ve never used an app. But at least a month ago, when I talked to ghogust8, he told me that the option to add MEM in the android was missing:

EDIT: updated information. Please read the post below, written by @amanda-norrsken.

Yes, you can add a mem in the app, but only a text mem, it is not possible to upload images.

EDIT: At least, it works in the Android version of the memrise app. Don’t ask me about the iOS version, because that seems to have a lot of problems and bugs.

EDIT #2: I just tried it on the app: when you are learning new words and phrases, then you have the option to add mems:
