[App Feedback] My thoughts on the New App Layout

Are they all on the Membus?

I am a Beta, but I was updated yesterday. I donā€™t know if it is Beta or regular?!

Damn, I still canā€™t get used to it. Itā€™s so much hassle to use the app now. Iā€™ve gone from 100,000+ points per day to less than that over an entire week. The survey now says 53 to 10 disliking the new interface and 1 star reviews are showing up in the play store. Come on Memrise, @Lien, give your loyal and paying customers the choice as to whether to use the old or new style home screens. I also think itā€™s a great idea of @LikeARollingStone to introduce options to customise the interface generally. I donā€™t think it should be but you could even make it another pro feature. Better to give pro users extra features than remove pre-existing features (off-line functionality) from the free version.

Just a few of us. Here they are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-artTSliJB8

The rest of us are in the office, going through all your precious feedback and improving the App accordingly. Weā€™re rolling out more and more improvements, I hope the App soon meets your expectations.
Would love to hear your feedback on the ongoing improvements and additions.

The live App was last updated on Monday, the Beta App was last updated yesterday.

the last Beta update was yesterday, the one before that was last Wednesday. Can you check again please? Let me know if youā€™re still unable to access it.

Iā€™ve just installed the latest beta version and the only difference I can see is you guys have changed the colour of the growing plant animation. How is that an important update? Maybe there are differences under the hood but there sure as hell ainā€™t any changes in the settings tab and there is still the same old (new) useless home screen. Are you guys taking this seriously?

My Beta shows 40 days to expiry which means the last one I got was 20 days ago.

Usually I get an email notifying of a Beta update which I then download through Testflight.

I have checked my emails and not received any in the last 20 days. I checked Spam to see if it had been spammed out - it hadnā€™t.

I checked Apple iStore for Testflight update - nothing, and no updates to Memrise either.

Yes, I am having this issue as well. The current Beta being shown on my device is Beta Version 1.0 (14). I use an iphone 5S running iOS 9.3.2.

Excuse me, itā€™s only a wheeze that crossed my mind after I had read posts in this forum. In fact, Iā€™m rooting for you and I hope that you will hear our request and let the rocket fly AWAYā€¦ :rocket:
Good luck!

Hi Jamus, My previous reply applied to the Android App, not the iOS App - apologies for the confusion. It has indeed been a little while since the last iOS Beta update. Our developers are releasing a fresh one later today.

You just caused me uncontrollable laughing fits :joy_cat:
To be fair, up until those last few hours they seemed to be having a blast, so weā€™ll happily risk itā€¦ in the name of joy!
Many thanks for your well wishes, weā€™ll keep you updated about the :rocket: and the Mem-:bus:

Er, do you get the reference? Whilst dozens (probably many more) of paying users are considering cancelling subscriptions a bunch of the team are dancing round Europe. Hence dancing while the ship sinks. Given the entire post it seems @frank.drebin doesnā€™t like the new interface but does have a nice way of putting it. I think the membus is a great idea and (if you can fix the app) I look forward to continuing to learn french with the immersion mode. I have looked at other apps but none have been as good as memrise used to be. You guys are great if only youā€™d make the ā€˜classicā€™ interface an option.

Please rest assured we certainly take things very seriously.
The Membus-tour is led by two of my colleagues (who solely focus on the Membus) and a team of volunteers. It doesnā€™t affect the office activities is any way, everyone in our office is getting on with work as usual.
We have been going through all the recent feedback, the negative as well as the positive ones (because we have received lots of those too!) and will take those into account for future updates.
The team working on the Apps is fairly small so the progress may be a little slow.

Just updated my Beta app (ios) the first time in 3 weeks.

And guess what?

Still the same crappy design and not a thing appears to have changed.

Memrise users: it appears that your criticisms, comments etc are falling on deaf ears.

Memrise appears to be ignoring us. At this stage, I will not be renewing my Pro subscription when it comes up for renewal in 4 months.

They have turned a pretty good app into a pretty crappy one.

My usage of the app has substantially reduced of late, to the point where I broke my streak of 135 days.

Very disappointed!

@Jamus - Iā€™m sorry to hear this news; for you, for us (the users), and for Memrise. This negative, downward trend needs to stop. Memrise used to be ā€œfunā€ as well as ā€œfunctionalā€. Now sadly, it seems to be precious little of either. I hope things can change for the better, for all of us.

@pdao - Thank you for your comment.

Yes, I do hope things improve, however I think they have become fixated on Membus and less on developing the app along the lines that users want.

Many times, programmers are not end users of the products they write and they become disconnected from the user base.

I know this because I have been a programmer and have seen this first hand.

I am not opposed to change, but it must be GOOD change.

The app has never been perfect - itā€™s had itā€™s flaws and those flaws needed correcting.

But the app has gone through a radical redesign - a rather childish, clunky one at that - and it has reduced itā€™s functionality and ease of use.

Where one could tell at a glance the status of courses, it is now awkward, clumsy and time consuming to be able to find the status, particularly if you are doing multiple courses like me.

I joined Memrise because I wanted to learn a language, not spend ages just trying to navigate my way around the app.

Every minute I spend wrestling with the app is another minute I could have used learning my chosen courses.

I donā€™t expect things to be changed overnight, but I do expect Memrise to listen to us, especially as we are paying customers - and it was especially disheartening to see that after 3 weeks of waiting for a new ios Beta update, together with the criticisms and suggestions of users in this forum, that not one single thing had been done to improve the appā€™s functionality - NOT ONE.

The worst thing Memrise has ever done is to involve streaks and Daily goal. Itā€™s all about streaks! Itā€™s a process of moving your personal motivation from inside to outside. And when you wipe out the out sideā€¦

I donā€™t mind the redesign so much, but Iā€™d also like a home screen again that lets me see all of the reviews and goals for my courses at a glance. I know thereā€™s a side bar now, but I still need to scroll around to get the information that was once available straight away.

Thanks.

It seems at least one version of the memrise app had the ability to display both the old (classic) and the new interface with a time/date switchover point. This is shown by the the fact that some peopleā€™s app changed without downloading another update as discussed elsewhere in the forum.

This being the case Memrise could solve all the problems immediately by offering a single setting option to revert to the classic interface. This would allow the 81% (57 to 11 respondents) of people whoā€™d rather use the old design to keep using the app while memrise fixes/improves the new one.

Perhaps memrise can fix the new interface in the end making it better than the old and perhaps some people do prefer it anyway but please donā€™t make some of your heaviest users suffer until you do. I miss my daily learning with memrise and frankly am sick of waiting for it to be fixed.
