[App Feedback] My thoughts on the New App Layout

I totaly agree. The new layout is very confusing and very childisch.
It is very difficult too see all needed information.
For me the most important thing to see on a home page is the list of courses, progress for each course and the statě of daily goal.

The new layout is just terrible.

You can argue about the looks.

But in any case it degrades the usability a lot:

  • No overview
There’s no way to get an overview of my progress on individual levels.
I only see two levels at a time (of the 96 levels my course has).

  • Scrolling madness
Even just opening the course make me watch that crazy automatic scrolling for four seconds.
Then I have to constantly swipe up and down in the hope that I somehow find the specific level I am searching for.
And to make matters worse each time I go into the detail view of a level and go back to the No-longer-an-Overview screen, it effing scrolls me to nirvana again.

Well, it can have been expected when they changed standard points goals with words goal in app (with the rocket icon). From my point of view, update is okay, but for scrolling. For courses with more than 15-20 lvls its reaaly inconvinient. Probably an option to choose beetwen standard and new views could do. Another (more complecated maybe, but fitting the new concept of design) way - create group of levels (solar systems) which will group e.g. 10 lvls together simplifying scrolling.

This solar system idea sounds like a pretty good one when you say it. I’m just wondering how good it would actually work (more buttons to push to get exactly at the same place, or very small super cute icons orbiting around each other?).

As for the goal, the problem is not so much that it is counted with a number of words and not a number of points, but that it’s really difficult to know how many courses with uncompleted goals are left. This creates absurd situations where, if you’re using the phone application, you might want to log into your account from your smartphone just to be able to check how many courses with unreached goals are left. This is a bit inconvenient if you’re studying in a lot of courses. I already find this inconvenient and I’m only taking a few courses that I want to study everyday…

I completely agree.

I have been beta testing for them and I said that I wasn’t taken with the new layout.

I knew it would generally not be liked.

The whole point of Memrise is to learn your chosen subject(s) not be chasing around trying to find everything.

In the drop down menu of courses, I have also recommended that the goal and number of wrong words be displayed so everything can be seen at a glance. Unfortunately, it has fallen on deaf ears.

Most times, programmers are not users so they can be out of touch with what users actually want.

This new layout is a retrograde step. It is more cumbersome to use, less informative and wastes users time.

I might have to give the app the flick and go back to the desktop version.

SCORE: Previous app 8/10. New app 5/10.

Memrise Crew - don’t forget that you have paying customers. Please start listening to them!

I have ADHD and find it extremely distracting with all the uneccesary pictures all over the place. Much preferred the old layout. I am also a paying customer. Really regretting updating now.

Did you ever think of reinstalling an older version? You might find it here.

I see it has become a ranting subject for a lot of you. My only displeasure with the new app is that I can not see the streak objective of each course.

I agree that you can not scroll through the levels as quickly (because you can only see 2 or 3 at a time instead or 5 or 6)

But I fail to see why you need to flick/scroll through your levels :

  • when you learn you go to the next level each time and you just need to know how many words are left to learn in your level (the new app does that). Do that many of you pick and choose the levels that you learn?
  • when you revise, most people would bulk revise the words that are ready to revise (you get bonus for revising more words together if you get them right) and so you do not need to scroll through the levels to find where are the ready items.

So I agree that the new app is perhaps not so practical but I am not sure it is worth putting out the ones who have not tried it. Or reconsider your subscription.
It caters for most users and their general use in learning, one level after another and bulk revision.

BUT not seeing the streaks from the course’s board is a pain I give you that

@Rabolde

Thanks a lot, I didn’t know such site existed.

Why do I need to scroll? Because I always seek for some informations.
I do Memrise and Duolingo parallel. In this specific case there is a bug. The scroll stops at the lowermost learned lesson, which is not the last done because random words are thrown in into regulars while learning. They are random, but they fit in the theme. So, there are completed lessons on the bottom of the Planetarium.

Thanks so much for sharing that!

for example: I’m taking some Thai and Cantonese courses which start with phrases and have the building blocks - words - later in the course. For such courses, the app is a pain’### to deal with. I almost never use the phone for memrising, but this latest version just blew away any ideas/mood to ever deal with the memrise app. Delete it for good…

I can only repeat what others wrote, new Android UI is epic usability fail. I am learning 20+ courses in parallel and now

  • I don’t see where I haven’t reached my daily goal yet

  • I don’t see total number of words to review

  • It is harder to just scroll through list of courses and see where I have words to review.

I really hope this new UI will be evaluated as a bug and fixed soon, I love Memrise but now this relationship has strong masochistic flavour.

Thank you so much for this link, although I don’t like the idea of fixing an older version (I still hope Memrise will add speed review for image based courses in some new update), now it’s really useful option (because this new UI really sucks, how could anybody think it’s improvement in any way?).

I started the app today to see the new layout and man, this is confusing. I think I will be mostly able to avoid the planet-things, but I don’t really see the point.

Just opened the app and I was rather surprised… And not in a good way.

Note that it still is possible to access the “old” list of levels for a course by tapping the flag icon next to the menu button in the top bar. So, we now have two ways to view the level list for a single course, but no way to get an overview of all courses at once… As I am learning four courses at the same time this makes reviewing them all very cumbersome.

The old overview screen was completely fine in my opinion. In fact, the entire app was fine. Why was this change needed? Just for the sake of change?

I would really appreciate it if someone from the Memrise team could explain the reasoning…

I hate the new layout. Hate it, hate it, hate it - it’s totally unnecessary and complicated where the old version was straightforward. I hate not having an overview, I hate having to go through so many clicks just to review words, I don’t need stupid planet animation just to review flashcards! I just want a straightforward language learning app to drill vocabulary. Especially frustrating is since I’m learning Japanese and trying to teach myself kanji recognition - I can’t test myself the same if I’m always typing into my computer I need the multiple choice questions that the app favors.

However what I have to say I’m most upset about is the fact that my layout switched without my updating my app? I don’t even know how that happens, the first time it changed I sent a scathing email to support and the next time I reinstalled and logged into the app it was back to before, and after that I turned off automatic updating because I knew I didn’t want this new layout. I updated it once, a week or so later, and read the whole “what’s new” description looking for any warning that it as going to be a big change but it was all “oh no just small bug fixes, making things run smoothly!” so I downloaded it. And my app was fine, same as before. Something like three days later, I open the app and all of a sudden there are planets everywhere, again. I turned off my updates for a reason! I don’t want the new layout, and even trying to reinstall off the backup from my itunes isn’t working! Both times the new layout showed up without any warning or any updating, which is both incredibly frustrating and really, really freaking me out.

Does anyone know if there’s a place online to find old versions of IOS apps? I found a link for android but that’s obviously not helpful.

There’s so many versions to download. Which one is the one before this? And which is for iPhone? Do you happen to know.

???

That’s android category so none is for iPhone.
