I have lately another Memrise dashboard open to see how many new words I have learned during the day. I have noticed it before but wasn’t sure if I really remembered my word count right. Today it happened again. My word count went down about 600 words. Instead of 2677 my word count should be 3261.
My guess would be that a course you learnt has been deleted. Is this possible by any chance? Has any of the courses you have been learning disappeared?
No. None of the courses I am learning from did disappear.
Can this happen if I quit a course that I finished and didn’t want to appear in my learning queue? I did quit 2 courses that I did not want to continue getting review words after finishing the courses.
My experience has been that quitting a course does not decrease my words learned count. Ignoring words I’ve learned and no longer wish to review does decrease the word count.____
If the word count only went down on the left of the site, but not on the course itself it is not too noticeable. For example I absolutely don’t care how much “words” I learned, because half of them are sentences, the other half is hiragana/katakana characters, and I had the same words repeating several times in different courses, so the “word count” doesn’t show any reliable data anyway. (I suspect my real word count is around “word count”/3 )
If suddenly one of my courses “forgot” about my progress, that would be really noticeable, but haven’t encountered that so far.
Hi @GabrieleCramer-Knebe, I’ve been investigating the issue you raised, and hence I had a thorough look into your account to understand if there was some technical problem with it.
We noticed you have some impressive streaks, however most of your courses only have a few word learnt. Such as the course 2136 Jōyō Kanji by Grade, which you’ve learnt 40 words and have a streak of 170 days.
That could be caused by restarting the courses. In order to understand the issue better, could you please let me know if that was the case?
Some of the courses got so difficult for me to keep remembering the words or sentences and continually made errors on the same words so I decided to restart from the beginning. The following courses I restarted:
2136 Jōyō Kanji by Grade (I am terrible in recognizing Kanji’s so I decided to restart the course after marking 120 difficult words for practice but still not getting ahead)
[ READING ] N5 Kanji (JLPT) (I finished the course but decided to go one more time through because of so many difficult words marked)
Learn Basic Japanese (Having problems with sentences and using the correct particle, decided to restart the course half-way through)
Japanese Counters (finished the course but still having problems recognizing the Kanji, so decided to retake the course for the 3rd time.
And there were several other courses( around 5 I think) that I finished and then quit because I felt I remembered the Japanese words well.
PS: 4 courses I set half-way through to restart and set it to learn for later, they got so difficult that I started to doubt myself ever learning the language,
Ouch, so I can expect the word count going down more once I start the other courses up again.
OK, on the one side I get it that the word count is going down, but on the other side, I have learned the words and just resetting a course should not get the word count down. I look like I am harvesting points having such a low word count and such a high number of points.
