Why have review points dropped from 150 to 5 per word?

I do Duolingo Italian and have completed the course. I review several hundred words daily (religiously) and am high up on the leader board. Previously reviewed words earned 150 points each but from today it’s only 5 points. Why is this?

Also, why do some language courses similarly award 150 points per reviewed word, while others only award 5 points?

Not really, it means they require you to learn 5 new words, but you will notice that it still based on your points, as you can review words and still get to your objective

That doesn’t answer my question. Why was I getting 150 points per word but now only 5? I completed the course weeks ago and have reviewed daily for 150 points per word, but today that stopped. Now I only get 5 points per word.

if you review words that dont have gray background you only get 5 per word. Do you use an app or web? In app if there is some number on blue circle you will get 150 or so per word. If there isnt any number and you still review, you only get 5 per word. That means you are reviewing words you already have done recently

if you wait long enaugh days you will get 150 ppd again.

I use the iOS app on an iPad. In several Italian courses, whenever I review I get 150 points, even if there are no words ready to be reviewed. But that stopped today for some reason.

I just found out the app was updated today, so it may be to do with that. Annoying though.

Sorry, read your post too fast. And I should have ticked as it went from 1500 points (not 150) to 5 words.

I see, easy points on IOS, 150 for every word reviewed, reviewable or not. How unfair

You reckon that’s what it was, an iOS bug? Well, if so they’ve closed that one.

Hi,

When items are ready for review, you’re awarded a higher score than when the items aren’t ready to be reviewed yet.

We use an algorithm especially designed to make you learn more effectively, it’s based on how many times you get the item correct/incorrect and on whether you have over-reviewed etc.
Therefore, certain items will need reviewing sooner and more regularly whilst other won’t need reviewing for a while.

As we don’t encourage reviewing before it’s due, the scoring for this is lower (5 points each).

There was a bug in the previous versions of the iOS App, where over-reviewing was also awarded 150 points.

I hope that clarifies the situation?

Have a lovely weekend,

Many thanks for the explanation.

Any other way to build up scores when reviewing not scheduled? Some users are motivated by leader board positions, but the update seems to limit that now.

Great app, btw. Has been invaluable in my language learning on the vocab side.

I would suggest to use the quick review tool if you want to imprint your learning and score points. It is a good tool to review words from a same course in bulk.

100 words to be reviewed per session, you score up to 50 pts per word if you are fast enough.

OK. But can’t be done on iOS as far as I can see.

As you suggest I have started to use speed review. However, it always brings up the same words, literally. I’m doing Duolingo Italian, which has 1758 words. But speed review only lets me cover the same 100 words every time.

Is this a bug, or do I have an incorrect setting?
