Why does memrise ask me to spell a word before learning the language alphabet?

Hi everyone,

I’m a beginner learning Russian and I’m a little bit confused why in my early lessons it asks me to spell a word in Russian before teaching me the russian alphabet/phonetics of each letter. Am I missing something?

Hi, Kristin.

It depends entirely on the course what the content and teaching order is. I don’t know which course you’re taking, but it sounds likely that it’s intended for those who have already learned the alphabet/phonetics.

If you have a look here, you can browse for other Russian courses, and maybe find one that’s better to start with.

I’ve never taken Russian, so I can’t personally speak for the accuracy or quality, but I did see this course towards the top of the list:

I would suggest taking a look at the Huliganov YouTube course as a possible route to getting on top of the Russian alphabet, as well as some other introductory aspects.

It’s pretty good. It’s not perfect, but there are no equivalents for some Russian sounds so that’s only to be expected. I will mention, though, that what you’re given in the Latin alphabet is sound equivalents, not necessarily how Russian is normally transliterated. For instance, “У” isn’t typically transliterated as “oo” but as “u”.
