Why can't I use kana in my username anymore?

I’ve been using Memrise for a long time now and one of the things that I really liked about it was that I could change my display name whenever I wanted. I like choosing a display name for myself that uses the character set of whatever language I’m learning.

For example, my name is こうはい but now just shows as some weird number like 111000 or something. I can no longer change it to anything other than English characters. This sucks! Why would you remove this functionality Memrise?

I’d like to request that you bring it back - removing features that seemed to be working alright is confusing and mildly concerning to me.

Hey, are you referring to the forums or the main website?

If I remember correctly, there is no support for unicode on usernames currently on the forums. When registering to the forums with Japanese characters, they will be converted to numbers.

We haven’t made any changes towards the forums afaik.

I’ve added support to show your full name ( こうはい ) in addition to your username (111100).

Thank you so much!

However, I was talking about the main website, not the forums. (Though I’m still grateful!)

Edit: I realize this is a bad example - that’s kanji not kana. But the result is the same. This used to be allowed, but was dropped.

Indeed, this should be allowed.

I’ve reported this to the web team, hopefully they’ll find some time to look into this.
