Hey everyone.
I’m new to Memrise (again) and have a question about the audio,
There is one in the courses that are already available. But if I create my own course there is no audio?
I used Quizlet before and they say the word for you (probably not the best way but you know if it sounds different than what you read). Also Google Translate does that too.
Is there any way to use that on Memrise? I’m not really sure about reading the words correctly so this would be a big help.
Like I said it doesn’t have to be a native speaker telling me the pronunciation. I just want to know if there is some sound changing while learning a new word. Just like on Quizlet or Google Translate.
Hey! First of all, thank you for your answer.
But I guess that’s only for the website? Because I use Memrise on my smartphone. Website only for making a new course. ^^
@SarahAlena Yes, you can only create courses using the web site, not using the smartphone apps.
When your are creating your own courses, you may have the option of selecting a pre-recorded audio file in the drop down “Audio” menu for that word in the Audio column, if an audio file already exists on Memrise for that word.
Otherwise, you either have to record your own file live, or upload one that you already have downloaded on your computer from some other source.
If your are using the web site, you can also add audio to any course by using cooljingle’s audio provider script that TheFour-GatedDanzig mentioned, but again, that only works on the web site, and doesn’t help you if you are using the app on your phone.
Also, you should be aware that Memrise has been making a lot of changes lately, and sometimes, their changes break cooljingle’s scripts, so don’t be surprised if something suddenly stops working without warning.
Okay, thanks for your reply.
I guess then that’s how it is and I will just use Google Translate if I’m not sure at all.
But I’m really surprised Memrise don’t have this option if every other flashcard app or vocab app does… 0.o
I think that Memrise omits a lot of features from the user-created courses, because they don’t want them to be “too good” and possibly compete with their official courses.
In my opinion, they would really like to eliminate the user-created courses eventually, and move everyone to their official courses, and start charging for all but the most basic levels.
Their investors want to make their money back. If I remember correctly, Memrise lost about 1.2 million pounds last year, 2016, and have a total accumulated loss of about 3.2 million pounds, since their inception. Obviously they can’t keep losing money, and user-created courses can only be seen as unwelcome competition, from their point of view.
Their founder even stated in an interview that his biggest regret was having made a web version, and not being exclusively a mobile app. So if he had his wish, there would have been only the app to use with official courses, and no way for users to create courses of their own.

I too hope that they don’t, but my feeling is that they will probably do it.
Maybe not all at once, but they will probably continue to break features in the user courses, like they did with the comma fiasco, and the parenthesis problems, and now with the disappearing mems, and broken audio reviews. I think that they will slowly make them harder to use, and less desirable, until one day, they will say that not enough people are using them, so they are closing them altogether.
I hope that I’m wrong, but I don’t think so. So, my advice to you as a newcomer would be to enjoy Memrise for what it can do for you, and try to get as much from it as you can, but don’t count on any features being here tomorrow.
Compound what you said with the horrible, horrible customer service the latter part of this year. If they really do do away with user-created, someone should take them to civil court.
Wow interesting, had no idea that something like this is happening.
But what I do not understand is, why don’t they better develop the self-created courses? I’ve created my own course and wouldn’t mind to pay (I used to pay for Memrise but later canceled It). The reason why I do not subscribe is, that the self making courses is very difficult. Also, now I added several audio files to my vocab, and It does not work on my mobile phone. And without audio, It is very difficult to memorize things…
