What to do if the author of a community course is no longer around?

The author of a course I’m currently working on is no longer around, she/he has obviously deleted her/his account. The link to the course author is _deleted_160726_1009_5713 which obviously leads straight to … Nirvana.

Is there any official/fundamental approach about what to do in such cases? There’s a few errors in the course material, some bad audio files etc. I wanted to contact the author to offer my help, but since there’s no one there anymore, is there a way of requesting to take over the ownership? Somebody invested a whole lot of work (817 words, all with audio, albeit many artificial voicings), it seems like such much a waste to just let it sit there!

one contacts one of the memrise mods and asks kindly to be added as a contributor…

I guess the author left memrise because - among others - some people complained about slang on memrise, kiddies, god forsake, should be not confronted with such filth (sarkasm off…)

Thanks. I know that people have been complaining about slang and - particularly - swear words and bad language. I see the dilemma regarding children, but personally, I can only say that the two slang courses (one finished, one on-going) have tremendously improved my ability to understand movies (for most of all times) and the quality of my conversations with natives (the few times I had the chance). So I really do fancy them.

Re the mods: how do you find their names?

Danke, Thomas!

@MemriseMatty or @MemriseSupport, could you kindly transfer ownership of this course to me, or at least make me a contributor? The author is no longer around and I’d like to to make a few corrections and amendments.

Hello @fanny_sta, would you be the right person to talk to since you’re the French Language Specialist (see the top post)?

Hi @Olaf.Rabbachin,

You are now a contributor to this course.

You can read more about what a contributor can and cannot do here.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Thank you! :grinning:

Hello @MemriseSupport! Thanks again for making me a course contributor to this course! Sadly, I cannot make all required changes as I cannot change column settings as a contributor. Would it be possible to make grant me the necessary rights? Alternatively - and since the original author has deleted her/his account - could you make me the course author? If there is any trace of the original authors name, I’d sure like to put it in the course description too.

FWIW, with Decks being around the corner, will contributors finally have the same permissions as course creators? If that’ll be the case, I could as well simply wait for Decks!
