Web Beta Programme Feedback

One of my favorite things about memrise was how snappy it was between questions, this beta seems to have slown down the pace of it a noticeable amount.

This is exactly my situation. I can already do recognition drills with Anki; if I can’t use Memrise for practicing spelling and grammar using typed answers, there will be no point in using this service and I will surely cancel my subscription. Please make the typed-answer option permanent for users like us who can’t easily get this functionality any other way.

This was dreadful. Numerous familiar words turned up as though new in Classic Review, with no perceptible call for a response. The system would answer itself and then bounce to yet another iteration of the same word, with no room for feedback. I have a 1031-day streak in progress and have previously learned a lot of modern Greek words here. But if this Beta replaces the old version, I’ll have to call it quits and move along to another site.

I honestly try to go easy on folks when it comes to beta programs because I know it’s tough to get things right but in this case, I’m having a bit of trouble holding my tongue.

This new design is…not good. As others have mentioned, there are big problems with speed. During review, selecting the correct answer actually rewinds the progress bar. When moving through reviews, the same button on the screen is either “I don’t know” or “Continue” which means that I end up hitting the button to mean something something completely different from what I intended quite frequently.

Count me among those who will have to cancel my account and find an alternative if this design moves forward to become the standard. I implore you to listen to your users and to reconsider moving forward with this and instead focus on fixing the smaller bugs with the classic design.

I like the speedreview quite well.
Now I want to help this team by reporting issues, but the only thing I can find is a few forum threads. This is not the way to track bug-fixes. Please implement a real bug tracking system before continuing.

The new classic review has some bugs that used to exist in the app as well. What is happening is that the material I review is saying things in my target language, and I have to select the written corresponding thing in the target language. For me that is not useful. I want to learn another language not only how to read it…

Why can’t I see in BETA others people score on same level as me? I can see only first 9 pardicipants score. Its very unmotivationally. I need like to see people at same rank as me so I can be motivated.

How can I get to each lesson from BETA?

Why were the typing steps eliminated, to learn the spelling of the word ?

This is change for the sake of change. One step forward and two steps backward. All I want from Memrise is a simple textbox to type my answers. I hope they listen to the feedback everyone is giving them otherwise they are going to lose a lot of users.

Typing words is critical to the efficiency of my learning, I have to actually remember how the words are composed. I’m surprised that you’ve decided to take it away. You can make a flag for enabling them (like in Closemaster), or remove automatically generated on-screen keyboards for non-Latin languages, so we’ll use our system language settings, but removing typing completely is a product killer for me.
Also, not having options is the real way to check my memory. In many cases, I can choose the correct answer from the options, but my memory of the word is not good enough to recall it just from the meaning. I want to catch these cases and relearn these words better.

I would like to have a full changelog with detailed changes to each of the areas currently in Beta. I can see which areas these are but not the main changes to them. When I was doing the new Classic Review in Beta, I noticed that the option to see mems was no longer there and personally I feel this was the most useful feature of Memrise so I would like to see this feature incorporated into Classic Review again, or at least learn new words (please!!)

Hi! My feedback! I love the changes. It’s really cute and fun! One issue I noticed is in the audio to definition ones, sometimes I get four definitions with nearly exact wording. I know this is supposed to add a level of difficulty, but how am I supposed to remember if it is “surround,” “to surround,” or “surround, around”??? Thanks!

Please don’t remove the typing tests. I only want to do typing tests and it would be a massive shame if you remove Memrise best feature!

Hi shiralee. Thanks for pointing this out. Do you mean turning green without pressing the button to the right or in general?

The buttons should go green in general (if they do not, please let us know; this is a bug) and we have a task scheduled to add automatic completion.

Hi Zetaku. We’ve got a fix done which we’re deploying today. Let us know what you think!

Is this num pad enter by any chance? This seems to be working fine on my dev machine so trying to help debug this for you. Can you let me know what machine, keyboard and OS you’re using and we’ll try and work out what’s going on.

We plan on adding numerical keypad support but, unfortunately, the current library we’re using doesn’t support them so it might be a couple of weeks to get this in.

We have a keyboard shortcut where ‘r’ replays the audio. Does this help or would you still prefer the enter behaviour?

Hey dodossssssssss. Do you mean snappy with respect to keyboard shortcuts or other performance issues?

Hi Spoudhastis. Sounds like you might have caught a couple of bugs here but I just want to check it’s not a design issue.

Numerous familiar words turned up as though new in Classic Review, with no perceptible call for a response.

Can you explain what you mean by ‘as though new’ here? What did the screen look like?

The system would answer itself and then bounce to yet another iteration of the same word, with no room for feedback

Can you elaborate on what ‘answer itself’ and ‘bounce to yet another iteration of the same word’ mean here?

Would it be possible to send your browser, OS and machine details? A video for these would also be super useful here to help find out what is going on.

And, as always, if you’re finding the new pages haven’t got all the kinks ironed out, you can switch back to the old version in your settings.

Hey Zimory. James on the Web team here. We monitor this forum lots for bugs and feedback and send what we find here (and elsewhere) to an internal bug tracking system. Sorry that’s not more visible for you but your reports are heard, don’t worry!

I hate the changes because being able to type type type is crucial to my Hebrew learning! That’s the most important feature for me. I stopped using memrise a few years ago because you changed the interface so much I couldn’t cope. I went back to using memrise a week ago and I loved it and now you’re making these bad changes again and it’s stressing me out. I switched off beta and I hope it will stay like that.

I’m not sure exactly what the cause of the snappy feeling was but I think it was a combination of 1, really fast animations between questions, and 2, minimal keypresses between questions. As far as performance goes the beta performs just as well, something feels slower though (maybe its me not being used to the new format).

Also, an update regarding the IME issue in Japanese classes, I switched from google’s IME to windows 10’s built in Japanese IME and, although the suggestion box problem is solved with that, whenever I type a correct answer, when it’s detected as correct, it immediately double what I’ve written and is no longer considered correct, so everytime I type something I have to delete a copy of the word before it accepts it. This issue does occur in old memrise, but only after a wrong answer (where you are told to copy the word after giving a wrong answer). Normal typed answers didn’t have this problem.
