Videos in ‘Learn New Words’

On the French for English speakers course there’s now videos of people speaking the new words - is it possible to turn these off and just have the audio as before? I don’t have a paid subscription

I am surprised that you don’t like these little videos, I think it is a really neat feature of the official memrise courses, because you can actually see how someone’s mouth is shaped and so on when they pronounce particular words.

The way speakers of European French move their mouths and control their lips is what makes French sound … well… French. If you are a native speaker of English that wants to sound halfway authentic, then you will need to do new things with your mouth and lips, things we (I am also a native speaker of British English) don’t ever do when we speak English.

And closely watching a native speaker is a really good way to learn how to recreate those un-English-sounding sounds.

I can understand that they might seem distracting and “just for fun”, but they do actually serve a useful purpose.

So do you work for Memrise? Do you know if they can be turned off?

No, I don’t. I just think the videos are a good idea. I am just a regular contributor on the forum, so I was recently given the “Leader” title and the ability to move things about on the forum, that kind of thing.

I have no idea if they can be turned off, sorry. Have you looked at the settings for the app? Are there any things you can switch off there?
