Using Offline Mode on Android Phone - Disabled?

I have been using Offline Mode (when I have no network access) on an Android phone to practice my courses for about a year now. I used to be able to download course data to my phone and practice anywhere. This seems to be now disabled. I found out by deleting memrise from my phone (on purpose, to clear out storage and start over) and reloading it. I can still download the Android app and practice from my phone – by ONLY if I am in range of a network. This makes my phone no better for using the application than a desktop computer. What used to be a key feature (for how I, personally, use memrise) seems to be entirely gone. I searched the help files and found a comment that Offline mode is only for Pro/Premium (paying) users. Granted, memrise staff is entitled to make their entire website only available to people willing to pay for the service - so making features only available for those who pay is also their right.

I’m wondering if I’m wrong about this. Is there any way that non-premium users can download course data to use offline mode when a network is not available (yes – I am frequently in places where I’m not using any network)? It also seems that I cannot even download course data for courses I have created – is there a way to use offline mode for courses I have created, even if I can’t use the feature for other user’s courses?

Is there a fix that I am missing somewhere?
Thank you.

What app version did you have?

Offline mode clearly is a Pro feature (reinstalling a more recent app version): https://www.memrise.com/premium/

I have an Android phone and couldn’t find what version I have. So I uninstalled memrise again, shut down my phone - and then restarted and reinstalled. At this point I think I have been able to download a few courses so that I can try using them offline. Maybe this is a fix for my problem.

Could you have logged in with a different account? A new one instead if an old one.

When downloads became a Pro feature, they grandfathered in old accounts, so that they could continue to download courses even if they do not have Pro. Only new accounts require Pro.

Edit: Interestingly I can’t find the original quote from staff. If it has been deleted, then there may have been a policy change. Hmmm. Anyway, it looks like the cut-off was 1st April 2016. I also came across an Android bug from a year ago where downloads didn’t work … so if you installed an old version, this could be the problem.
