Two way of typing "Ri" (hiragana)

I don’t understand why it is typed differently. Is it on purpose?

Written hiragana ‘ri’ looks like the one you can see in the text box. The one on the circled button is the “digital” version, being a standard ‘ri’ on computers and other electronic devices
