There have been a number of threads of time zone issues. I live on east coast of Australia and the clock ticks over for me at 10am (at this time of the year). When I work on Memrise before 10am, the points accrue for the previous day. This morning I did a test, and worked on four of my courses (all with goals set). I completed them and earned the relevant points (accruing to yesterday’s - Saturday’s - count). Interestingly, though I have no Learning Events showing at all for today (Sunday). Is this weird or ‘normal’? I just had to add a category and was forced to use a language one - I think the same issue would apply even if no languages applied.
In my experience, the learning events and the overall streak—not the goal for a specific course—go by GMT. Midnight GMT must be 10am in your part of Australia. That means that anything you do (for example) on Monday morning before 10am your time will be counted in Sunday’s learning events. The category that the course is in won’t effect this issue.
If you set your time zone settings for Australia, than your individual course goals will advance before 10am.
So, yeah, Memrise counts learning events by GMT, but it counts course goals by your local time zone. Maybe it’s a bug; maybe it’s by design.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with it. When I was in Asia a few months ago, I enjoyed knowing that I had until 9am to complete my course goals. Most days, I aimed to get a lot done between 9-10am, and then I’d go out and see stuff. On days when I was really busy, I knew that I could get up early the next morning and squeeze in the day’s course goals right before the day reset.
Thanks for your reply @Kaspian. I guess it’s not a big deal really. For the work I did (before 10am) I actually didn’t achieve any learning events - though I did complete 4 goals, so my work for that day was finished. That probably means I learnt no new words during that period. BTW I do have my time settings on Australia EST. Later in the day when I had more time - I did continue on - can’t help myself! I’m keen to get to Memperor as soon as possible. I put in inordinate amounts of time though it still seems it’s take forever!
I just realized that I neglected to mention that I have my local time zone set at GMT, regardless of which continent I’m on… My course goals reset at the same time as the learning events change days.
…
I don’t remember any odd learning event quirks when I was in Asia, but it’s possible I wasn’t paying attention, or I’d already seen them when I was in Central America. When I am in Central America, there are quirks: First, on the Learning Statistics/Memrise Pro page, the dates on the chart with 365 blue squares were one day off. Second, when I did Memrise in the evening, (after the Memrise day reset), no learning events showed up on the dashboard for the new day. (I don’t remember if they appeared on the learning statistics page.) The learning streaks in courses with goals were advancing, but it looked like I wasn’t getting any credit for the learning events. When I refreshed the dashboard the following morning, those learning events showed up.
Just for fun, next time you do Memrise in the morning before 10am, note your learning events before you start (and which day they’re applied to), earn some points, refresh the dashboard, and confirm that the learning events didn’t get counted. Then change your computer’s clock to somewhere in Europe, refresh the dashboard again, and see if the number of learning events (or the dates they’re applied to) changed.
Currently, London is 1 hour ahead of GMT, Berlin is 2 hours ahead, and Greenland is 1 hour behind.
Hey @Kapian - thanks for all your feedback. I will test it again, keeping a track of learning events before and after. Likely won’t be able to do till the w/end. Will keep you posted. Thanks again!
Hi @Kaspian, I did the test this morning (Friday here) prior to 10am, noting learning events before and after per your suggestion. The learning points changed and have been added to Thursday’s stats with nothing showing for today. I understand this effectively means I could do nothing else today and my streak for those 4 courses will be maintained. The problem I would have though is that my graph would remain grey-out for today - and we (I mean ‘I’) can’t have that! In the scheme of things it really isn’t a big deal I guess. Thanks for your input and suggestions.
