I think that I should first state that I am using the web version of Memrise. I am on the third lesson in Japanese, and when ever it asks me to spell out how the word hello sounds Japanese (konnichiwa), it always says that my answer is wrong even though I know I’m typing in the word correctly, and therefor forcing me to skip the word, which makes memrise think that I am having trouble with the word. Since it thinks I am having trouble with the word, it makes it so that it won’t let me learn new words! This wasn’t happening the day before, so I hope I am not the only person who’s been getting this bug. (I don’t know if this is important, but my web browser is chrome.) Here is a screenshot:
For Japanese courses you should be using an IME to input the answers in kana or kanji (depending on what the course is asking for), rather than trying to use the romanization of the word (ie: the correct answer here is “こんにちは”, not “konnichiwa”). That goes for all courses that use non-latin alphabets; it’s not a glitch.
(moved the thread into “Japanese”, as it is not a bug)
To get the Japanese keyboard on your computer (assuming you are using Windows this is how to do it on Windows 10 so a older Windows might be a bit different too) you:
Go to your computer’s Settings page
then Time and Language
then Region and Time
then press Add Language
scroll over to Japanese and click it to add.
After it is added there should be a button next to your time on the toolbar and click it to switch to the Japanese keyboard, then next to that you will see an A or あ click that to toggle between Roman letters and Hiragana.
Oh, thanks… I feel a bit stupid now. For the other words I had been learning I had been typing in the pronunciation for the Japanese words in English, so I didn’t realize it wanted me to actually type it in Japanese.
No worries that confused me when I first started using Memrise too.
I’d like to add to this because I had a similar problem in that it would want me to use kana without actually telling me. I switch to a japanese keyboard when I figure out it doesn’t want it in romanji, but I really want to be able to tell when it wants that because either I get it wrong because I wrote something in romanji, or I get it wrong because I type it in kana characters when it wanted it in romanji.
Is there some way to tell which it’s asking for that I’m not seeing or is this just a problem with the site? (also it’d be nice to have an onscreen keyboard for japanese characters like on the mobile app, otherwise typing it in katakana using IME makes absolutely no difference since you’re spelling it the same way either way, but that’s another issue entirely)
I know that this has already been addressed, but I am having trouble related to IME. I downloaded the japanese language pack on Windows 10. I am having issues inputting specific words like konnichiwa in japanese correctly. I am spelling everything correctly in English, but it is not being translated correctly by the IME. I have not been able to advance with my lesson because of this problem.
Example: こんにちわ(typing konnichiwa) or こんいちは(typing konnichiha) - What memrise is asking for is こんにちは
さよなら(typing sayonara) - What memrise is asking for is さようなら
I looked in the settings, set to Romanji. Any help would be appreciated. i am completely new to IME and Japanese.
こんにちは and さようなら ARE the correct forms.
First word is typed as “konnichiha”, that’s because the hiragana for “ha” is read as “wa” when it is a particle.
The second word is pronounced “sayounara”, since there’s a slight glide with the “yo”, so it is “you”.
