The Forum seems incredibly complicated

The Forum seems incredibly complicated now. Is there no way to make a comment about a specific course, without going through this (to me), huge mess? Occasionally I find errors or want to make some comment to a specific course. Now apparently, every topic possible has a section. Probably not what most want or need.

I am lost! How can I make a course comment or mention an error now. Going through this new system is a nightmare, and seems much less likely to receive any answer, when everything is now thrown together. Is there either an alternative to this new system or a simpler way to use it , that may still get responses?

Hi @gustav46,

I hope you will soon find it easier to navigate your way around the new forum. It doesn’t take that long. A lot of things about it are better than the old forums but there are a few drawbacks, too. Some of these have been discussed already in a number of threads elsewhere in the new forum. One of these is that it is now the responsibility course creators to place a “Course Forum” page in the relevant forum category and link it to and from the course page in the learning site. Not all course creators have done this yet. Some didn’t get the email and, probably, some couldn’t be bothered. Where a new-style course forum page has been created, the chances of getting a response should be good - and, let’s face it, lots of posts on the old-style course forums were left unanswered.

I’ll try to help you find your way around. Could you give an example of a course that you want to make a comment about? As an example, from a quick look at your profile, let’s say you wanted to raise a comment or question about the “1000 words of elementary German” course. There are two ways of getting to the new forum from the course. You will see from the course home page that the course creator has included the url of the new forum in the course description area:

Unfortunately, this doesn’t work as a hyperlink (some of us users have been asking the Memrise team for this for some time now), so you would need to either copy and paste the url or type it into your browser.

Alternatively, as you have already found, if you click on the “Forum” button on the course homepage, it now takes you to the new forum homepage. From here, you click on “German” in the “Language Quarters” category and then scroll through the list to find the course forum:

This, of course, is the slower option!

As with the old-style forum, the ‘creator’ should get an email notification when you post your comment but, another way of ensuring that he/she gets a ‘nudge’ is to include their username in your post (eg @abcxyz).

If the course creator hasn’t opened a new course forum page yet, it doesn’t take long to open one.

I’ll try to help, if I can.

Still lost - no understanding of how to make comments about a course. This should have been explained better before the switchover. Will look at courses again. Also- how do I change the letter I was assigned in the Forum to my regular user symbol? Maybe I’m dense, but this is also removing a lot of the element of fun that many of us joined Memrise in the first place.

You can do this in your “preferences”. Click on your “G” avatar in the top right corner of the page and then on the ‘cogwheel’.

however, both (web version) methods are counterintuitive and time consuming; the user can do such think only when learning or watering in a single course; the user has to keep several tabs open; the user has to pause the course s/he was learning in; the user has to search for a certain thread, etc. The options are not available of the user is watering all items in a language, etc. How about the app users, how do they get in here?

I’ve quit many courses after noticing that the creator is not active in here - I am not happy about that.

I have the iOS version of the app on my tablet but rarely use it. I just checked to see how you navigate from there to this forum and I could only find a convoluted route via “settings” and “feedback and support”, but maybe there’s a more direct route that I’m missing. :head_bandage:

Also, there is still no direct link back from the forum to the learning site which we were ‘promised’ a long time ago. This means having to keep at least two tabs open.

You’re starting to have a bad influence on me, Niamh! I used to be so positive about things. Maybe it’s just because it’s Monday. :grinning:

PS - I think this topic only got bumped up the order today because Arete_Hime did some ‘housekeeping’.

ALAAAAN! how dare you say i have a bad influence on you… you, you… meanie! … :innocent:

would introducing in the UI a link to the general forum be that bad for the capacities? i mean, revive a bit the old direct forum link on the learning/review page with at least a link to the main page of this forum?

could the owner of the thread edit the title (of the thread) a bit? it is taking quite a bit of screen space…

I have edited it on the OP’s behalf.
