The course takes missing answers as correct (a leading numeral issue)

I have a course multiplication table course ( https://app.memrise.com/course/5823529/carpim-tablosu/ ) in the math category. I prepared it for my brother, but it has a problem which found by my brother. When the answer is for instance “4x5” if he writes only “4x” the app accepts it and gives the full point. But in this case, he learns nothing and, I can not depend on his points. Because all he cares about is his points and he loves shortcuts. How can I solve this problem?

I don’t see as to how an “x” could serve in a way a bracket would work, i. e. make something optional.
I’ll tag @MemriseSupport for you - maybe you guys can shed some light on this?

Thank you. I also have no idea. Might the numbers be the reason?

That’s a strange one which I´ve not come across before either.

While you wait for someone to explain what’s causing it, the only thing I can suggest is that you try setting your course to “Mark Typing Strictly” and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks, but I’ve already done, doesn’t work unfortunately

One thing you could try out:

  • start editing your course
  • click on Databases, then select your database
  • hover over the column-header of the column that contains your source data, then click the pencil icon that appears upon hovering
  • go to the Testing tab page (1)
  • check the Mark Typing Strictly checkbox
  • click the Save button

Let us know whether or not that helps at all, please.

Hi Olaf,

Good morning! See my post just above your latest. I had a similar thought but the OP had already tried that. Unfortunately, it seems to have made no difference.

@aysesoylemez - I’ve tried recreating your course. It works as it should do for me on the web version and on both versions of the app. Does it work OK for you? I have added you as a contributor so you can go into the edit fields to see if the settings I have used are any different from the ones you used (https://app.memrise.com/course/5896485/multiplication-tables/edit/)

Thank you so much @alanh, but it is still same here. I added an ss, and now it had a new problem it approved some answers when there is only one number. For example the answer is “4x2” I only wrote “4” it approved by itself without me doing anything

In fact I checked it again in my course when I only write the first number like “2” it approves it also:

I have another course that I prepared for my sister. It has the same problem:

When there is a number might it be ignoring the part after letters or symbols?

Hi,

It’s weird! I’m not sure what is causing it. I’ve just tried your course and it works OK for me (didn’t auto-accept until last character typed):

We may have to wait for @MemriseSupport to take a look.

Hi @aysesoylemez and others

I reported years and years ago that if the answer was 1 John (and other instances with a leading numeral) it would answer it as correct as soon as I typed “1” even if I thought the real answer was “1 Peter”.

I tried strict typing but from memory that did not help.

I don’t know if this issue was ever addressed.

PS

Just tested an old course and I did not get the problem if I continue typing, but if I press enter after the number it accepts it.
I did not have strict typing on it.

I may have fudged a solution by not accepting typing tests and allowing matching.

Then I created a lot of wrong dummy answers in the database but not in levels.

In your case have 4x3 4x2 3x4 etc.

It might be possible to accept trying for one way only (reversed levels).

ie Question is “what is 4x5”? Answer type “20”.

Found this topic from four years ago which may refer to a similar issue:

If it is the same bug, I’m not sure why it only affects some people, unless it’s maybe something to do with which OS or server a person is using. It’s very odd that aysesoylemez’s course behaves OK for me, and my similar course doesn’t behave OK for aysesoylemez.

Edit: Here is another (more recent) one:

It seems to be a difficult nut to crack!

Thanks @alanh for finding those, but my report was probably on the old Forum system which we don’t have access to but allegedly they still do.

@alanh and @DW7 Thanks a lot for both of you.
I think all of them refer to the same situation. Once we start with the number doesn’t matter the rest.
@alanh in my own course I didn’t have auto-accept. But in yours, it happened in some. In mine, I didn’t have any auto-accept, but when I wait until the time is up or click next it accepts my answer.
@DW7 I liked your solution, it is very practical. Until they find a real solution, I will stick to turn off typing solution.
Edit: I’ve just seen your note. So now you don’t have problems with the numbers in your old course?

Hi @aysesoylemez, I’ve just done some more testing and I’ve updated my PS above to …
Just tested an old course (on the web) and I did not get the problem if I continue typing , but if I press enter after the number it accepts it.

So basically the bug still exists.
