The ability to message your mempals?

I’ve noticed that you can’t actually message in the memrise app. I mean I understand if it’s to stop random people messaging you, but what happens when you both follow each other?

There has never been an option to communicate with each other besides the forums, also not in the browser.

You can add mempals so you either can find them again (note that there also is no possibility to find other users unless you encounter them through courses or the forum), or because you would like to learn their courses without having to pin the courses to your own wall until you’re ready to learn them.

But the most common reason is because you have a leader borad that tells you how much your mempals have learnt in the last week/ month in points. If you find mempals that are around your level, you might find it motivating to compare yourself and your learning habbit to them.

That’s not true.

In the beginning, we had something called the “garden wall” on our profile pages, which other members could leave messages on, but the powers that be removed it.

Interesting! This must have been before my time (late 2014). I wonder why Memrise is intent on reducing user interaction (the exit of in-course forums, etc.)

You can message people on through this forum. You have to earn the title of ‘Member’, though. Check out this link to see how to earn it: https://meta.discourse.org/t/what-do-user-trust-levels-do/4924/5

To message a Mempal, type in their forum username. Hope I helped.

I was unhappy with the closing of the old forums but personally I now find it to be an improvement to have all the discussions on courses on e.g. Finnish to be collected in one section instead of being spread out over many in-course forums.

For most of us, the old ‘garden wall’ was a useful facility but, sadly, it was removed following complaints from some users that it was being abused (trolling, harrassment, etc).

On the plus side, like Marcus.W, I find this forum has much more functionality than the old course fora but it’s a pity that, due to being a Discourse forum, it’s ‘detached’ from the learning site. As a result, it’s possible that many Memrise users are unaware of its existence.

Good point! I also appreciate the organization of the forum and being able to learn from my fellow French learners.

I can definitely see bullying happening with the ‘garden wall’ concept, unfortunately. I agree that most users are unaware of the forum, especially since it does not exist on the app version. I believe Duolingo has the same web-only forum concept as well.

Yes. The forum isn’t publicised on the app versions. The only way I know of to get from the app to the forum is: Profile > Settings > Help … and then click on “Memrise” at the foot of the page. This takes you to the Memrise website logon page where you then scroll down to the “Forums” link. It’s hardly surprising that not many people find their way here.

A little while ago some of us course creators added the forum address to our course short descriptions on the app but it’s not possible to make it a hyperlink.

They could do more to encourage a sense of community. They don’t appear to have posted anything on their Twitter site for over a month!

It would be helpful if they added a link to the forum in the website header.

Duóingo has actually very useful discussion for every item tested. (as if each word in course here would have its own talk space) And it is accessible through the app very easily… actually one of the best features there.

In my short course descriptions, I put something along the lines of ‘access the web version of Memrise for more info’. I also pasted the course forums in my web version descriptions, but the inability to make it a hyperlink is limiting.

It is interesting to compare Memrise’s and Duolingo’s Twitter feeds. The latter engages with users, links to articles, celebrates anniversaries, and makes announcements. Memrise, on the other hand, is inactive and only links to irrelevant content.

Thanks for the info it’s very helpful. I am having trouble finding a friend on here. I know his name but apparently the firm name is different. Any ideas on how to find people on here that don’t show up in the search?
