I was wondering if this course that I have created would be any good for learning Japanese!?!
Basically, what I’ve done is took the Japanese and English subs of Death Note and trying to use it as a learning tool.
However, seeing as I’m still very new to Japanese I’m not sure if it would be a practical way to learn Japanese, but I was wondering whether it would be worth it so one could learn to watch their favourite shows without the use of English subs this way.
If someone who is more experienced in Japanese could check this course out and just let me know if it is worth my time creating this course and others like it, it would be much appreciated.
As well as pointing out anything that could improve the course at all.
Oh, I thought for myself this could help with my reading and listening even if I don’t necessarily understand all of what is being said. I don’t know, I’m still a newbie to learning Japanese.
Possibly useful but you are likely to run into copyright issues. Just providing the subtitle files may be ok but then you run into timing issues as not every version of a tv show has the same timing.
I’m only using the subs, not using the sound or video from the series. Also, I may edit up subtitles when needed to make the sentences make more sense for the course.
So there should be no problems such as copyright I don’t think.
Ah ok no problem then. Different encodings of tv shows can have different framerates (24 or 29fps) so the subs can go out of sync and have timing issues and would need to be re-sync’d but since you aren’t providing them for anyone else it wouldn’t be an issue anyway now that you have explained.
Also worth mentioning that translations aren’t always direct word for word translations so you will only get the gist of what is being said when comparing the two, since they often change the words to fit a bit better and things like that.
Here he is covered under fair use via transformative and educational sections of that part of copyright. It’s the reason my “Zettai Kareshi” course could stay up over 2 years.
I have found that learning sentences with vocab you already know is a waste of time, but other wise it is a great way to learn Japanese. Just ignore sentences you understand well.
