Special characters

There used to be an option to have Memrise be strict with special characters (making you type à instead of a) but I don’t see it anymore…was it purposely removed?

Are you talking about the web or the app? Regarding the Android app, I have to enter letters exactly as they need to be, i. e. in the official Spanish (from German) course by Memrise.

Other than that, course creators can also specify as to whether strict typing should be used, so it might as well be a feature change in the course that you’re learning.

This is in the memrise created courses, both web and phone apps. In french for example it will accept “ca va” and also “ça va”. There used to be an option in the settings where you could chose to only allow exact letters but it seems that option is gone now.

@MemriseSupport, @JBorrego, @lurkmoophy: can you guys comment on this, please?

Hi @JamesS414,

Thanks for getting in touch. Whether or not a course you are learning allows only exact lettering will depend on the settings the course creator has put in place.

If you are the creator of the course, you can enable strict marking on tests, which means only the exact letters/accents will be accepted. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the course you’d like to edit on web and click Edit Course on the right hand side.
  2. Click Show/Hide on the levels you would like to enable strict marking on. Alternatively, you can click Reveal All at the top if you wish to enable it for all levels.
  3. Above the columns, you will see a pencil symbol. Click on this.
  4. Under the Testing tab, select ‘Mark Typing Strictly’. Don’t forget to click Save!

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Best wishes,
Memrise team

@MemriseSupport: @JamesS414 wrote that this is about official Memrise courses. I would have expected that these all require strict typing, or at least the same setting across all courses/languages, which doesn’t seem to be the case here.

UTF-8 works fine for me, and I type in བོད་སྐད་ Tibetan words.
