it is useful when you’re browsing for specific course forums, in the sense that helps overlooking the irrelevant links… ahem… probably the number of threads with this tag will grow exponentially, indeed. But I don’t see any other solution for orientation in this general mess…
I have stopped adding it on to those who forgot it. Feeling it would be wasted time…
It helps newbies (like me!) identify which course forum is “official” for the course and therefore feel confident about posting in it, knowing that the feedback is actually being watched by the course creator (in theory)…
Are you talking about tags, or square bracket text in the subject line?
I think tags on this forum are useless unless all users could make them. It doesn’t make sense to try to have a tiny number of leaders trying to tag all the posts by everyone else.
If you’re looking for a course forum, you should know in what category it is? So then going to for example: http://community.memrise.com/c/language-quarters/language-spanish should be quicker?
I think we should agree on one way to deal with this. Either add the tag or not. Having some topics have the tag and some not is the worst of both worlds because then you can’t rely on the system anymore.
As two users now have said they see some use for the tag, I think we should default for now to adding it.
It’s becoming obvious to me we have different ways of thinking. I am pragmatic and try to find the best solution given the arbitrary constraints we have here, you are idealistic and if the reality does not conform to the ideal, you don’t want to consider alternatives or workarounds.
Regarding this topic, we have to look at the usability of the thing from the standpoint of someone who wants to find a topic using this list http://community.memrise.com/tags/ They want clear descriptive tags and not too many of them. Having a limited number of gatekeepers helps with that.
My thinking has evolved on this. For example yesterday I added two tags bird-vocalizations and the German vogelgesang, now I’m considering deleting those and instead using the more general bird tag.
A topic of yours has the tag tropical-fish. Now I’m thinking the more general fish would be more appropriate. Once there are dozens of topics with the fish tag, a further subdivision might become handy, so then you could add both fish and tropical-fish.
No, I don’t think that’s it at all. But I do thing that a tagging system on a forum is useful for things like this only when all the users can use it. I do not think there’s much value in a few people going around tagging everything and inventing new tags, except for if there’s value to themselves and they want to do it because it helps them. It’s not a “workaround” and it has nothing to do with what’s ideal or pragmatic.
I assume, making an ass of “u” and “me”, that most would use the search button so if they identify those two words “course forum” if it is in the title or carries the tag, they would get to it. So i would add the tag if the title doesn’t have it.
yeah, but we don’t speak about how “regulars” might search in here, or? I meant that having in mind the user looking for a forum, and now s/he has to click him/herself around like mad, just to post a request about an accent or some missing alternative… an user trying to post something might lose patience and forget about memrise altogether (well, in fact, who cares …)
I don’t know, in fact, I always find what I’m looking for…
yeah, you’re probably right; [Course forum] is more than enough
opps - yes I guess I was talking about the square brackets… haven’t used tags yet but I agree with this:
I don’t know whether it’s possible but it would be best perhaps if the leaders can create new tags whilst newbie posters can select tags from among those which have already been created (to prevent there being too many similar subdivisions and (worse!) misspelled tags). Nothing ruins the searching experience more than realising that the post was tagged as “Italan” instead of “Italian”
The search function here doesn’t look at tags. The only way to browse using the tags is by going to this page: http://community.memrise.com/tags/
@Arete_Hime and @sircemloud - I have to confess I even used the tag area @Arete_Hime mentioned to get an inkling of what “faroese” meant, since I never knew the term until I saw it listed as a tag (I know, shame on me). So maybe they serve a multitude of reasons beyond what we expect. Please keep adding them.
Yes, I realized that after…
As Hydroptere said the key is to help the search for the “commoners” (I can say that on the 14th of July as a French )
Most would use the search button.
July 14th is Bastille Day ?
Yes it is! The uprising of the commoners. Inspirations to many they say.
Hope it was a proud and patriotic day for all in France today. Thanks for the illumination.
.a terrorist attack on a crowd of celebrants.
I was just reading the news about this online… So very, very sad… My heart and prayers go out to everyone in Nice.
Apologies for taking this thread beyond its intended purpose…
Not a reply directly to you but to this sentiment: I wouldn’t be so sure. All it takes is clicking on a tag, for example at the top of this topic and you can see all the topics that have the same tag. That’s a pretty quick way to browse. Then if you’re a bit curious, you can go to http://community.memrise.com/tags/ to explore more tags.
