i want to find lessons for the Shanghainese dialect. Its a dying dialect and we must keep it alive. Its the dialect of the biggest chinese city.
Hi, I believe you’re right. One tricky thing about Shanghainese is that Memrise primarily works through learning the written, and secondarily through the listening.
The Shanghai dialect, and the many similar situations throughout China, are ONLY spoken languages, with no unique written language. Because of that, a course that uses the simplified Mandarin characters, for example, with Shanghainese pronunciations, would be a very slow and counterproductive way to learn to SPEAK Shanghainese. Many people who would be interested in a course like this can already speak Mandarin and would likely mostly want to HEAR the important differences in tones and pronunciations.
If you’re looking for lessons in SPEAKING Shanghainese, Memrise might not be the best format. I would recommend looking elsewhere.
If, however, you really think it’s a good idea, or you can’t find it anywhere else, I’m sure there are many Shanghainese people who would be interested in helping with something like this.
Have a great day!
